4 Cases I Won’t Recommend Two Strand Twists as Your Starter Locs Technique Two strand twists are one of the most popular starter loc methods, but popular doesn’t mean universal. After years of consultations and installations, here are the 4 cases where I’ll recommend something different: 1. If You Have a Loose Hair Texture Two strand twists depend on the hair’s natural coil pattern to grip, hold, and eventually bud. If your texture is loose think 3s and below. The twists simply won’t hold their structure long enough for the locking process to begin. The strands will unravel faster than they can matt, leaving you in a frustrating cycle of re-twisting with no real progress. A technique that works with your texture, not against it, will always give you a better foundation. 2. If Your Hair Is Permed, Relaxed, or Texturized Chemically processed hair has had its natural bond structure altered, which means it no longer has the texture or grip needed to hold a two strand twist through the budding phase. The hair is too smooth, too soft, and too weakened at the strand level to interlock properly. 3. If You Have an Active Lifestyle If you’re exercising frequently, sweating regularly, and washing your hair often, two strand twists are not your friend in the starter phase. They need sustained periods of undisturbed rest to begin budding. Frequent washing and sweat exposure will loosen the twist pattern repeatedly, resetting your progress each time. Your lifestyle is just as important as your hair type when choosing a starter method, and I’ll always choose a technique that fits how you actually live. Continued in the caption!
