Enter: Liquid Wood. 🪵✨ I used Retique It Wood'n Primer to create a real wood surface right over the old finish, then followed up with Varathane Jacobean oil Stain. The secret sauce? #TipTuesday - Test your sealants first… 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, I learned some things about sealants on my piece here. (Enjoy the mix of asmr sounds in my video, kids included!) . Before I explain what happened, I want to share that I’ve ALWAYS used the water-based gloss or semi-gloss spar urethane by @varathane on every one of my pieces for many years. I love it! . However, this time I decided to try Varathane’s oil-based equivalent because this piece will be displayed OUTSIDE at the school Luna (daughter) goes to - in a swampy area with harsh direct sunlight and in all weather (hurricanes included). With that, I thought oil soaked into the wood would be great, even though I know it will still fade over time. . Moving on, I realized that, for some reason, I grabbed SATIN finish instead of gloss/semi-gloss (which I always use). After my first (and only) coat of the oil spray, it started forming a sticky, white film over all my woodburning. I panicked and asked other pyrographers for help! . I learned the issue could be a number of reasons. I’m pretty sure I applied too much since I tend to spray heavily with the water-based sealant. With oil sealants, apply THIN even coats. I also think there was a weather/humidity issue since I sprayed outside in cold wind and brought it inside suddenly. Lastly, I think it had to do with it being a satin finish instead of clear gloss. . I tried fixing it by using a hair dryer to help cure it and nothing happened. I also attempted scraping out those areas of white buildup on my burns, and that was obnoxious and did not really fix it. So I waited… . In the end, I just went for it and sprayed my reliable water-based semi-gloss spar urethane over the whole thing. Now it looks like nothing ever even happened. I can’t believe it!! I feel so relieved! 😮‍💨 . I know what you’re gonna say - why didn’t I test it first? I’m not that kind of gal! I just go for it! Lesson learned! 😅 .
