Which executive functioning skill do you struggle most with? For me it’s that shower with a hair wash. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE a good shower, it’s just all of the steps around it that make it seem like SUCH a chore. ADHD often brings along a disruptive force called executive dysfunction, which hampers our ability to plan, organize, and initiate tasks. So, when it comes to something as seemingly simple as showering, executive dysfunction delights in throwing obstacles our way. Distractions become irresistible temptations, diverting our attention from the bathroom and into the abyss of our racing thoughts. Time seems to warp, transforming minutes into seemingly endless hours as we succumb to procrastination. The mere thought of starting a task can trigger a surge of overwhelming emotions, often leading us to avoid it altogether. #executivedysfunction #adhd #audhd #asd #autism #neurodivergent #mentalhealthawareness

It’s not always panic. It’s not always tears. Sometimes it’s just too many thoughts at once. A neurotypical brain might hold one clear line of thinking. An ADHD brain under stress is juggling everything — tasks, emotions, memories, noise, expectations — all at the same time. That mental crowding is exhausting. When overwhelm builds, you might notice: • racing or looping thoughts • difficulty starting even simple tasks • irritability or emotional reactivity • zoning out or shutting down • feeling frozen while your mind won’t stop This isn’t a focus problem. It’s a nervous system under load. Trying to think your way out of it usually makes it worse. What helps is giving your nervous system a signal of safety so it can reduce the noise.
