What increases executive dysfunction for you? While shame doesn’t explain the root cause of all executive dysfunction in ADHD, it is a common factor that powerfully amplifies it. Many people with ADHD grew up needing a nudge at the start of tasks—only to be labeled incompetent, careless, or slow. Early difficulties with initiation were often misunderstood in a brain that needed more time to pick up on patterns rather than focus on details right away. Over time, fears of failure—of being “too sloppy,” “not put together enough,” or not like your neurotypical peers—can make starting even harder. It’s like a puppy trying to navigate the space between cups, while comparing itself to the cats around it who seem to leap into tasks effortlessly—never getting the chance to recognize the gift of its persistence and instincts. The solution isn’t more pressure or shame. It’s finding environments that don’t punish you for early mistakes, and giving yourself space to grow into a task. With support, safety, and time, many people with ADHD discover that persistence—especially in private or non-judgmental spaces—not only improves executive functioning, but can flip it on its head, making them exceptional at certain tasks over time. #adhdtips #avoidantattachment #executivedysfunction

Saying “yes” too fast can lead to overwhelm and resentment. Practice pausing before answering requests by saying, “Let me think about it and get back to you.” 2. People-Pleasing The desire to be liked or avoid conflict often leads to prioritizing others’ needs over your own. This can drain energy and create emotional dysregulation. Start small by identifying one situation a day where you can set a boundary without overexplaining or justifying. 3. Negative Self-Talk Internalized shame and criticism can fuel self-doubt and emotional dysregulation. Notice when your inner dialogue turns harsh and challenge it. Replace thoughts like “I’m such a mess” with compassionate reframes like, “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.” 4. Overthinking Decisions Ruminating over small choices can lead to mental exhaustion and decision paralysis. ADHD brains often get stuck in a loop of “what if.” Limit overthinking by setting time boundaries for decisions and asking yourself, “What’s the worst that could happen?” 5. Believing Productivity Defines Your Worth ADHD women often feel they must prove their value by overworking or overachieving. This mindset can lead to burnout and emotional shutdowns. Start defining success by how aligned your actions are with your values, not by how much you accomplish in a day.
