Networking with Literary Agents, the Gentle Approach Imagine someone ran up to you and dumped a cold bucket of water over your head, and no it’s not the ice bucket challenge of the early 2010’s. Instead it’s you running up to an agent, or really any professional you want to work with in the publishing industry, and saying you need to represent my book! Please, please represent my book! It’s surprising, uncomfortable, and makes you want to get away. But what if there was a different way to network? A way that didn’t feel like networking but rather like building a friendship? It’s actually super easy once you identify a few people you think would be a great fit to building your career with you. And it starts with spending time building a genuine online “friendship”. Follow them on their socials, engage with what they share authentically, and show up where they invite you to. (Appropriately of course!) Networking has so many negative connotations it probably needs to be retired but the word really isn’t about faking it, schmoozing, or being a yes man. It’s just small, consistent moments where you show up with genuine interest. Tag a friend who needs to hear this!
