Why spend hundreds on AI coding tools? You don't have to. There are free models out there that work just as well. Maybe even better. I've tried them. Here's what I found.
First up—DeepCoder 14B. Think of it as the underdog that punches above its weight. It's almost as good as GPT o3 mini. No joke. I ran it on my own PC. It didn't break a sweat. The code it wrote? Clean. Fast. Reliable. Like having a smart buddy who never gets tired.
Next is Qwen2.5-Coder-32B-Instruct. This one's a beast. Handles over 40 programming languages. I threw Python, Java, and even Rust at it. It didn't flinch. Some say it's the best open-source coding model around. I'm one of them. It's like having a Swiss Army knife for code.
And then there's GLM 4 32B. This one surprised me. Outperformed Deepseek r1 and GPT o1 in my tests. Even on my not-so-fancy PC. Long code? No problem. Complex logic?
