While history often credits 1991 as the “Year Grunge Broke,” the technical reality is that the shift began in August 1990 with the release of Facelift. It was the first album from the Seattle movement to be certified Gold, then Platinum—effectively ending the dominance of the Sunset Strip hair-metal era months before Nevermind even hit shelves. “Bleed the Freak,” written by Jerry Cantrell, serves as the album’s most visceral statement of intent. It was a song born out of pure resentment—a direct response to an industry and a world that Cantrell felt was “bleeding” the band for everything they were worth during their early struggles. In 1990, Layne Staley wasn’t the fragile figure seen in later years; he was a vocal powerhouse with a predatory stage presence that commanded the frequency of every room he entered. This remains a vital entry in the Vault: the exact moment Alice In Chains bridged the gap between heavy metal technicality and the dark, atmospheric soul of the Northwest. When Stella said “blanket” and I picked one to spread on the couch for her, she refused to hop up. She then looked at the other blanket in the room, the one behind where I was sitting. Stella didn’t want just any blanket, she wanted THAT specific blanket behind me. This so reminds me of how my 1.5 year old daughter communicates with me every day. Like this morning while she was getting dressed she said “purple.” I picked out a purple shirt, but she put it back in the dresser and pointed to her ponytails. That simple back-and-forth is our most common pattern of interaction with buttons: she initiates, I ask a follow up question, she expands. I love these exchanges because you can really see cognitive skills in action. Stella has to understand my question to be able to provide an appropriate response. If you want to help your dog engage in short conversations like this, try repeating what they say and adding one more word. Ask a simple follow-up question. It’s okay if they don’t respond right away. Pause. Then model one or two possible responses and choose one to act on. Every time you do this, you’re showing your dog how conversations continue and what happens after they use words.
