TAGrowing up in poverty also meant that they did not have enough to eat, but “there were people in the community who were helping us, giving us food such as condensed milk, spam and corned beef ”, Anthonia Hui says. “It could be a religious organisation or a philanthropist—in those days, we didn’t know that [the act of giving to improve the welfare of others] was called philanthropy; they were invisible to us, but we somehow benefitted [from what they had to give]. From [this], I recognised that philanthropy is not about giving money, it’s about giving time and tangible things that meet the needs of others.”
