On Christmas Eve, 1968, the crew of Apollo 8 became the first humans to orbit the Moon. From the void of space, they decided to read the Book of Genesis live during a television broadcast. Bill Anders read Verses 1-4, Jim Lovell read Verses 5-8, and Frank Borman read Verses 9-10. Years later, the Artemis mission is preparing to reach the same heavens nearing Easter weekend. In a documentary they noted that although the mission focused on the Moon, when they reached space they were astounded by the beauty of Earth. When the crew of Apollo 8 first orbited the Moon in 1968, they looked back at the "Earthrise" and read from Genesis, describing the beginning of our world. Now, as the Artemis II crew passes that same milestone, they’ve left us with a message about the purpose of our world: Love. Before slipping into the silence of the lunar blackout, 250,000 miles from home, Artemis II pilot Victor Glover shared a message that echoes across eternity. In 1968, Apollo 8 told us how it all began. In 2026, Artemis reminds us why it all matters. As the spacecraft reached its farthest point from Earth, Glover pointed us back to the greatest mystery of all: "Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. Flight controllers in Houston beamed up a pre-recorded message from Jim Lovell, who commanded the Apollo 13 mission and orbited the moon with Apollo 8. Jim recorded the message for the astronauts before he passed away last August at age 97. Volume up!! 🔈

Apollo 8 was the first crewed mission (to the moon) during the Apollo era of space flight. It orbited the moon 10 times and returned to Earth after a 6 day mission. Artemis II will not spend time orbiting the moon, but will use the lunar gravity to redirect its course and send it back to Earth after a quick flyby. Similarly, this will be the first crewed mission to then moon in the modern era of space exploration.
