So many interventions that use ABA methods are disguised these days. I’ve been caught out too! Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. The emphasis on routine can limit a child’s ability to adapt to new or unexpected situations out in the real world. Overemphasis on Compliance: ABA therapy has been criticised for its focus on compliance and “normalizing” behavior, which can undermine the child’s individuality and discourage self-expression. What to look out for… 🚩 a lack of individualized plans 🚩 overly rigid 🚩 punitive techniques 🚩 a focus solely on behavior control without addressing underlying needs 🚩 the aim to mask behaviours to conform or appear more neurotypical What to look for instead… ✅ emphasis on communication and social skills linked to the child’s wants and needs ✅ ongoing assessment and adaptation of individualised plans ✅ a caring and compassionate approach centred around the individual and their desires and needs ✅ focus on trust and relationship building ✅ child-centered focus ✅ Autism or neurodivergence affirming There is lots of talk about long standing and recommended methods such as TEACCH system and PECS and Attention Autism. All three i use to some degree in my classroom. I am constantly researching autism affirming approaches and speaking to autistic adults to learn and do the best I can by my learners. My method is to not be afraid to make adaptations, if something feels like the 🚩 , then change it, adapt it, individualise it, make it child-centered and autism affirming- and if you can’t …. Setting fixed times for meals, play, therapy, and bedtime helps reduce anxiety and increase cooperation. Example: A visual schedule for the day can guide transitions smoothly. ✅ Simplify Language Using clear, concise, and consistent instructions reduces confusion and supports better understanding. Example: Instead of saying “Can you please go and bring me your red shoes from the room?” say “Bring shoes.” ✅ Focus on Functional Skills Prioritize teaching skills that promote independence in daily life. Example: Practicing hand washing, using utensils, or dressing builds confidence and autonomy. ✅ Incorporate Interests Motivation is key in learning. Embedding a child’s interests makes teaching more engaging. Example: If a child loves cars, use toy cars to teach counting, colors, or turn-taking. She is calm, validating his needs and giving him time to express himself. When a child experiences challenging behavior in therapy, a good therapist will respond with empathy. There are so many ways to help a young child dealing with stress or trauma. THIS is WHY: they have dedicate years to studying behavior analysis, learning how to assess, intervene, and help individuals develop meaningful skills that improve their quality of life. First, ABA therapy is data-driven and individualized. Every session is built around specific goals tailored to the client’s needs, whether it’s communication, social skills, emotional regulation, or independence. It’s not just about keeping a child occupied—it’s about actively working toward progress. Second, ABA therapists are trained professionals, not just supervisors keeping kids entertained. They analyze behaviors, adjust interventions, and use evidence-based strategies to help individuals gain functional skills. Dismissing their work as babysitting ignores the complexity and impact of what they do. Lastly, the assumption that ABA is just “watching kids” downplays the emotional and mental effort therapists put in daily. They handle resistance, burnout, and the weight of knowing how crucial their role is in shaping someone’s future. Reducing their work to mere supervision is a disservice to both the therapists and the clients who rely on their expertise. If you are a parent, please make sure to ask the right questions to get the good ones !
