Congratulations to fellow Canadian @bertucciderm for succession as the President of @asdsmembers Gratitude to @drdiannedavis, @drdouglaswu and @drjaishreesharad for being a part of and sharing their clinical pearls and experience using lasers and devices for treating ethnic skin in our session And thank you to @hsuderm and @bhatiaderm for the invitation to moderate in their live chairside injectable session (saving the best for last 😏!) I had a fantastic time giving two lectures and participating in two dynamic panel discussions—always learning and sharing with the best in the field! The absolute highlight.... Watching my dear friend, the incredible Dr. Kavita Mariwalla (@mariwalladermatology), rightfully take the stage as the new President of ASDS! So thrilled for her and the organization! 🤩 ​But it wasn't just about the science; it was also a massive social success! So, let’s talk about what your dermatologist cares about when you are getting your skin checked. We don’t care if you: ❌Shaved your legs (we’re not focusing on that!) ❌Don’t have a pedicure (we’d rather you not so we can examine your nails) ❌Forgot to wash your hair yesterday (we’re not judging) ❌Arrived at your appointment sweaty because you had to run to get there (we’re just happy you’re at the appointment) We do care that you: ✅ Have no makeup on your face (we need to see what you’re covering up!) ✅ Know your family skin cancer history (especially melanoma) ✅ Mention any new or changing spots (no matter how silly you think it might be) ✅ Are prepared for us to look head-to-toe (because we’re going to want to!) We know coming to the dermatologist for a skin check is not always easy, but prepping to get your skin checked should not be a stressful process. Please don’t worry about what you look like when coming to the dermatology office. I often have patients apologizing for aspects of their appearance, the undergarments they’re wearing among others, but I am here to tell you - do not worry! We are focused on finding skin cancers (and any other skin concerns) - that’s it‼️ Are you skin check ready? ⬇️⬇️

Retinoids - What are they and why are Dermatologists so obsessed?  ✨ What - Topical retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that help increase skin turnover. Note retinOIDs are different from retinOLs --- they are more potent and are often prescription (with the exception of adapalene). Retinols are a milder version, are typically over the counter, and a great option for those who can't tolerate retinoids.  ✨ Why - Retinoids have been proven to reduce and prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, boost collagen production, and also help treat acne and hyperpigmentation/uneven skin tone. Patience is key however, as it can often takes ~6 weeks to see effects.  ⚡️ How - People new to retinoids can experience irritation or dryness initially. While this may be unavoidable in some people with very sensitive skin, it can be prevented by following some very important key steps as outlined in this video.  📌Step 1: Start with a clean face. Use a gentle moisturizer and pat face dry. Here I'm using @larocheposayusa Toleriane Face Wash Cleanser, Purifying Foaming Cleanser.  📌Step 2: Apply a pea sized amount of the retinoid or retinol (important‼️) and spread it across your face. It may feel like too little but these creams are potent, don't worry.  📌Step 3: To help prevent the drying effect, generously apply your moisturizer of choice on top. Here I'm using @neutrogena Hydroboost. I usually recommend patient's start 2-3 nights a week. Then increase SLOWLY as tolerated. The end goal is to do this nightly however, it's okay if you can only tolerate a few times a week. Remember, these should only be used at night and make sure you wear your sunscreen in the AM! 🤗 Have you tried a retinoid before? As board certified dermatologists, not only do we have extensive training that includes 4️⃣ years of college, 4️⃣ years of medical school, 4️⃣years of residency and an additional optional 1️⃣ or 2️⃣ years of fellowship, but we also do many different things in the course of a day. From surgery to injectables to teaching and product development/research, dermatologists are a busy bunch. I’d say that among medical specialties, we also see more patients in a day than most with some derms seeing as many as 70 patients a day! So hug your favorite dermatologist the next time you see them.
