What do hearing tests and audiograms actually measure? How do they show what someone can or can’t hear? Let’s start with the basics: Decibels (dB) measure how loud a sound is. Hertz (Hz) measure the frequency or pitch of the sound. A hearing test combines these two to find a person’s hearing threshold, the softest sound they can hear at different pitches. For someone with typical hearing, the threshold is usually 0–25 decibels across a range of frequencies. For reference, 0 dB is about the sound of a leaf falling or a pin dropping. 25 dB might be a quiet whisper. If someone needs sounds to be louder than that to hear them, it may indicate hearing loss. An audiogram is a graph that shows these thresholds. It helps audiologists see how hearing changes across pitches and track any progression of hearing loss over time.
