Over the past 20 years, Autism Speaks has helped spark a global movement, pushing for more understanding, more acceptance, and more opportunities for people with autism. From funding groundbreaking research to advocating for better support and services, we’ve come a long way, but there’s still so much more to do. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we’re marking this milestone by listening to and learning from the autistic community and setting bold new goals for what’s possible. That’s where Team 20 comes in. With the help of athletes, celebrities, advocates, and mission partners, Team 20 is here to make noise, raise awareness, and keep pushing for inclusion at every stage of life. Together, we’re fighting for a world where no one on the spectrum is left behind and where every autistic person has the opportunity to thrive. @hatsbyabbey @christineabbeysmom @coreymartincraig @ajh3nning @chefbeckernyc @colinholderman Let’s do this. 💙 #Team20 #RedefinePossible #AutismSpeaksTeam20

Did you know about Sensory Sensitive Sundays? 💙 Sensory Sensitive Sundays are special hours designed to provide children with sensory sensitivities and their families a quieter, more comfortable experience. With dimmed lighting, reduced noise levels, and a calm atmosphere, they’ve made it easier for everyone to enjoy the games, food, and activities in a setting that feels just right. @chuckecheese will host a national Sensory Sensitive Sundays event on Sunday, April 27 from 9–11 a.m. across the U.S. and Canada where 20% of sales from the entire day will go back to Autism Speaks. These events offer a calmer, more inclusive space for kids with autism to have fun. https://www.chuckecheese.com/sensory-sensitive-sundays/ Jude: @theautismcafe

I’ll be honest…when I first heard @barbie partnered with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network to create the first autistic Barbie, my first thought was… how do you make a Barbie “look” autistic? Then I saw her. Long dark brown hair, a purple dress with matching shoes, a fidget in her hand, & the best part…an AAC device. An AAC device is Mila’s main form of communication. And suddenly, this wasn’t just a Barbie. It felt like her. My long-haired, Barbie-loving, will only wear clothes or shoes if it’s purple, device-using daughter…right there in doll form. I ordered it immediately. What I didn’t expect was what would happen when I gave it to her. The love in her eyes. The giggles she shared. A moment I will NEVER forget. 😭✨ When Mila realized the Barbie’s device was pretend, she walked over to her own talker and said, “Hi.” “I use my device to talk.” When I asked her what her Barbie’s name was, she pressed her talker, “My name is Mila.” Representation matters more than we can ever explain. Thank you @mattel and @autisticselfadvocacy for seeing our kids & giving Mila a doll that looks just like her. 💜👧🏻 Autism acceptance. Inclusion matters. Barbie. Barbie autism doll. Autism speaks. Autism mom. Autism.

#autismo #autismoenpositivo

TOOLS TO KEEP KIDS SAFE | The heartbreaking death of a 5-year-old nonverbal boy with autism in Port St. Lucie has sparked urgent conversations about how to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. Families across Florida know all too well the dangers of wandering — a risk especially prevalent among children with autism. Candi Spitz, Executive Director of Autism Speaks and a mother of two boys with autism, joined CBS12 News at 3 p.m. Tuesday to discuss just how widespread this issue is and the innovative steps being taken to protect vulnerable children. According to the CDC, about 1 in 31 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Florida has the fifth-highest rate of autism-related drownings in the nation, and more than 60% of child drowning deaths last year involved children with autism. One of those steps is Project Lifesaver International — a program where participants wear a nonremovable, battery-powered wristband. If someone goes missing, law enforcement can track them down using a radio transmitter. Read more on CBS12.com #AutismAwareness, #AutismAcceptance, #AutismCommunity, #AutismSupport, #AutismAdvocate
