By lowering your hips and allowing your elbows to drift high, you place the lats in a fully lengthened position under significant tension. This deep stretch is where the most muscle damage and subsequent growth occur, making it far more effective than just focusing on the "squeeze" at the bottom of the rep. Precision in form is what separates those who feel this in their triceps from those who actually blow up their lats. Notice how the torso remains relatively parallel to the floor, allowing for a greater range of motion as the arms move overhead. By keeping a slight bend in the elbows and imagining you are pulling through your elbows rather than your hands, you minimize the involvement of the arms. This mechanical advantage ensures that the latissimus dorsi is doing the heavy lifting throughout the entire concentric and eccentric phases. If you’re looking to break through a plateau in your back thickness or width, it’s time to stop ego-lifting with heavy rows and start mastering the mind-muscle connection of the pullover. Incorporating this as a finisher or even a pre-exhaust movement can help you better engage your back during your primary compound lifts. Focus on a slow, controlled negative—taking roughly 3 seconds to reach that deep stretch—and you’ll quickly realize why this is considered one of the most underrated exercises in the gym.
