How to backhandspring - details below 👇🏻

Step 1: Warm up & Stretch
- Make sure to warm up your whole body well before doing BHS. Dont forget to include spine and wrist mobility in your warm up too. Do bridges, backwalkover and handstand before if you can.
Step 2: Jump back onto pillows
- You need to get comfortable jumping backwards before attempting the BHS. Therefore, jump back onto the pillows to get the feeling of going backwards and to know that you are safe.
Step 3: Sit back and roll out of it
- Sit back onto the pillows and roll out of it. Do that a couple of times until you feel confident.
Step 4: Add a little jump
- Now add a little jump to step 3. Start with a minor jump and build it up slowly (remember - new things takes time)
Step 5: Try to arch your back + a more explosive jump
- Its time to work on that arch which we do in a backhandspring
Step 6: Remove pillows
- Remove the pillows/mattresses one by one as you feel more safe in the skill.
Step 7: ✨The result ✨

If you can go to a gymnastics center or something like this, where they have good mats and people who know how to spot you…do it🔥I’d always advice you to work on this skill with a spotter if you can☝️
However for those who don’t have access to that...here is a way to approach this skill step by step.
Before working on this skill make sure you warm up and prepare your back, shoulders wrists and everything for this skill.
Skills that are nice to have before attempting a backhandspring are bridges, a solid handstand, backwalkover or the macaco.
The first step in this tutorial is learning the macaco. I have a entire video on how to learn the macaco already. You can find it on my IG page.
Get confident with the progressions. When you are ready...fully commit to send it! Or get yourself a good spotter it’s safer.

DRHere’s one simple drill that can fix your back handspring shape 👊
Do a handstand against a mailbox mat for support, with a cheese mat propped on the wall behind you. Kick your feet off the cheese mat and use your core to pull your back from an arched position into a tight hollow body 🤍
This helps you feel the right shoulder and core engagement for a cleaner, stronger back handspring.
