Learning how to skate backwards is a great roller-skating skill to learn because it is one of the most versatile moves and is unique to each skater. 🛼✨
1. Start off with small side to side steps. This helps with your coordination.
2. Once you get comfortable going side to side, try backwards cross steps. This will get you used to the feeling of going backwards.
3. Doing bubbles will help you build stability and your balance.
4. Be sure to look over your shoulder when skating backwards. You’ll need to see behind you to avoid collisions.
5. The secret to keeping your momentum when going backwards is your hips‼️ You’ll want to alternate your hips side to side.

IR4 Things New Skaters Need to Learn 📝
1. How to Skate Backwards: Bend & push your heels open then pull them together. Always look in the direction you’re going.
2. How to stop: Lean forward on your front skate & twist your back skate in. Slowly lean back.
3. Transitioning Forward to Backward: Lean on one skate & twist the other from the heel (or lift) to face the opposite direction, lean here then turn the other skate to follow.
4. Cross overs: Lean on one skate & lift the other to step to the side of the planted skate. Transfer weight, then lift the back skate & step to the side.

Throughout my *almost* 5 months on skates, I am continuously taught that laughing and learning is all a part of the journey :) Don’t be afraid to fail and never stop trying to succeed! **HELLO! 🚫STOP🚫, BEFORE YOU COMMENT, yes, I am well aware it seems as though I do not wear safety gear while skating, however this is not true. I wear full gear at the skate park and when I am trying new things. Yes, in the past when these videos were taken, I definitely could have been wearing wrist guards/helmet/knee pads and I understand your concern. However, it was my personal choice and I always have and always will accept full responsibility for the consequences of my actions.
While I have not sustained any wrist, knee, elbow, head, etc injuries, I have gotten small scrapes/bruises, but these have mostly occurred at the skate park. The falls shown in the video also look worse than they truly were. If you have experience skating, you know exactly what I am talking about (dramatic falls not being bad at all).
One last thing, I posted this video to show that I fall and make mistakes too! That is how I got to where I am and I’m thankful to have learned from each and every fall. I am not a perfect being who doesn’t fall. If I never fell, would anyone comment on my seemingly flawless videos that I should wear more gear? Do you comment on large skate influencers who don’t wear gear?
Anyway haha, while wearing safety gear is a choice that only impacts myself, not wearing a mask isn’t, so wear a mask, sign some BLM petitions (links in bio), & stay mellow. Thanks for listening.

SIStruggling to skate backwards without feeling like you’ll fall?
This 3-step breakdown will change that… fast.
Most people try to learn how to skate backwards by forcing themselves to roll. That’s usually why it feels scary, stiff, or out of control.
Skating backwards isn’t about throwing yourself back. It’s about building control first.
That’s why I teach it in lemons.
In this video, I break it down the same way I had to learn it:
Step 1: lemons in motion to build comfort and edge control
Step 2: staggered feet, lemon with one leg to teach balance
Step 3: alternating lemons to connect it into real backward skating
These three steps train your body to control the movement instead of panic through it.
If skating backwards has felt harder than it should, or like you’re always one mistake away from falling, slow this video down and work through the steps in order. Don’t skip ahead. The stability comes from the foundation.
