Under the theme “Honouring the Struggle, Igniting the Future,” the Barbados Union of Teachers proudly joins the nation in the observance of the Month of the Disabled. Over the course of this month, we have been reminded of the courage, resilience, and achievements of persons with disabilities, while renewing our collective commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society. Within our education system, there are many teachers, support staff, and students living with disabilities who contribute meaningfully every day to the life of our schools. Their talents, dedication, and perseverance enrich our classrooms and workplaces, often in the face of physical, social, and attitudinal barriers. As a union, we recognise that disability is not inability, but too often a result of environments that are not designed to support everyone equally. Honouring the struggle means acknowledging the historical and ongoing challenges faced by persons with disabilities, including issues of access, accommodation, and understanding. It also means recognising the advocacy and determination that have led to important gains in awareness, policy, and practice within education and beyond. Igniting the future requires action. As educators and trade unionists, we must continue to advocate for: •Accessible and inclusive school infrastructure, •Appropriate resources and assistive technologies, •Professional development in inclusive and special education, and •Supportive workplace policies that allow teachers and support staff with disabilities to thrive. Looking ahead, the Barbados Union of Teachers envisions an education system where inclusion is not an initiative, but a norm—where students with disabilities are fully supported to reach their potential, where staff are empowered and accommodated, and where diversity is celebrated as a strength. The Barbados Union of Teachers stands in solidarity with persons with disabilities, their families, and advocates. As the Month of the Disabled comes to an end, let us carry its message forward—continuing to honour the struggle, ignite the future, and work towards an education system and society where no one is left

Since the Disabilities Act in 2022, Jamaica has made meaningful progress toward a rights-based approach for persons with disabilities. Awareness has grown, legal protections are stronger, and more persons feel empowered. However, continued enforcement, adequate funding, and accountability are essential to building an inclusive society. Advocacy is not always comfortable. Sometimes it means speaking truth in rooms where people would rather hear applause. At the People’s Forum dialogue, an important reminder was shared: Antigua and Barbuda does not only need legislation — we need implementation. Because legislation without implementation is simply words on paper. As a member of the disability community, the Disabilities and Equal Opportunities Act (2017) should protect individuals like: • Name: Joshuanette Francis • Diagnosis: Osteoarthritis • Living with osteoarthritis for the last 8 years • Wrongfully fired because of osteoarthritis • Fighting the company responsible for 5 years • Advocating for justice • Advocating for the establishment of the Disability Tribunal • Advocating for the full implementation of the Disability Act This legislation exists to protect people like Joshuanette, yet many of the protections promised in 2017 remain unfully implemented. As advocates for the environment, Good Humans 268 will continue raising the issue that environmental legislation must also be enforced. Laws exist to ensure companies that produce bottles and packaging on the island contribute to systems that support recycling and responsible waste management, including shipping recyclable materials off island. Antigua and Barbuda already has legislation related to waste management and environmental protection. What we need now is accountability. All stakeholders must be held responsible: Government. Private sector. Businesses. Individuals. Communities like Grays Farm and Five Islands continue to feel the impact of landfill pressures and environmental challenges. Advocacy is not about tearing down governments. It is about ensuring that the laws we already have work for the people and communities they were meant to protect.

Since the enactment of the Disabilities Act, public awareness has grown significantly, with more inclusion in planning, communication, and accessibility efforts. While progress is being made, key areas still need attention—employment, access to education, and the built environment. Let’s continue the work toward full inclusion. March is recognised in Barbados as the Month of the Disabled - a time to pause, reflect, and recognise the strength, resilience, and contributions of persons living with disabilities in our communities. At BARP, accessibility is not simply a feature of our building; it is part of our commitment to dignity, inclusion, and respect for everyone who walks through our doors. We are proud to be accredited by the Barbados Council for the Disabled as a fully accessible facility. @barbadoscouncilforthedisabled From our main offices to the Legacy Foundation – BARP Members’ Business Centre, our spaces were designed so that people of all abilities can move comfortably, participate fully, and feel welcome. This month, and every month, we stand with persons with disabilities and continue working toward a Barbados where accessibility and inclusion are simply the norm. #BoldActiveResourcefulProud #HealthyAgeingAgeingStrong #getBARPcertified #Barbados We Pun A Mission!

As March is recognised as the Month of the Disabled in Barbados, Mission Barbados continues to emphasise the importance of building a society where every citizen is included, empowered, and able to participate fully in national development. Mission Barbados Ambassador for Public Health and Safety, Christopher Gilkes, the programme’s lone disabled ambassador reminds us that accessibility, dignity, and equal opportunity must remain at the centre of our national transformation. Mission Barbados is important because it seeks to create a more inclusive, resilient, and people-centred Barbados, ensuring that all citizens, including persons with disabilities, can access information, opportunities, and resources as we work together toward the goals of the six national missions. #MissionBarbados #MonthOfTheDisabled #InclusionMatters #Accessibility #PublicHealthAndSafety Mission2030

At 6 years old, a bicycle accident left Janeil Odle permanently blind. She went on to graduate valedictorian, earn First Class Honours in Law from UWI, and draft the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act — passed in Parliament in January 2025. She is now a Government Senator. "Vision is not defined by sight — but by purpose." 👊🏾 #JaneilOdle #Barbados #IWD2026 #ADVOMagazine #DisabilityRights
