Three things to remember for giving effective instructions 1. Never assume your child or student knows what you want. What feels like common sense to adults often isn’t always obvious to kids. 2. Following instructions is something kids learn by doing, not by being told once. Walking them through what the instruction looks like, practicing it together, and responding in the moment (feedback or reinforcement)  gives them a real opportunity to get it right and experience success. 3. Tell them what TO do, not just what to NOT do. Avoid instructions that rely on “no” or “don’t” statements. These don’t give kids any information about what behavior you’d like to see. For example, instead of “stop kicking,” try “put your feet on the floor.” Instead of “don’t interrupt,” try “if you need me, you can say ‘excuse me’ when you want to talk.” P.S. Practicing as psychologists and behavior analysts, we have to change our language often depending on the context. Psychologists can have a range of theoretical orientations, including developmental, cognitive, social, and behavioral. While all behavior analysts have a behavioral orientation, they can vary in their emphasis on radical behaviorism, ACT, verbal behavior, or many other micro orientations within the discipline. Behavior analysts and psychologists can approach the same question very differently. The behavior analyst may focus on specific technologies (task analysis), outcomes (shoe tying completion), and mechanisms (reinforcement) while the psychologist may focus on topics like developmental level and self-esteem/efficacy. Here’s the thing - they are both frameworks with a common goal. Neither answer is right or wrong. In fact, both responses would benefit from content from one another. This was one of the realizations that motivated us to write our book, “Psychology Essentials for Behavior Analysts”, which comes out next month through Routledge. This is a common example of scripting, where children repeat phrases rather than answering from their own experiences. As behavior technicians, we gently guide them back to authentic communication by asking reflective questions. For instance, we might say, “You said scaring dinosaurs—where did you hear that? From a video or a story?” This helps build awareness of where the words came from and supports more intentional communication. You also might say: “That’s a fun idea! But what do you, [their name], what do YOU like to do?” This keeps the interaction validating while softly inviting an authentic answer. Practicing with compassion means demonstrating patience and modeling calmness while treating individuals with respect and dignity. It is important to train clinicians on how to respond proactively to crisis situations in order to ensure safety and supportive environments. Lack of training can create hazardous situations for both clinicians and children, resulting in poor practices. This often contributes to the negative perceptions of the application of Behavior Analysis in children on the Autism Spectrum. Severe behavior can be influenced by many factors beyond the scope of ABA. Therefore, coordinating care with other professionals and adopting a multidisciplinary approach is essential. As a hands on BCBA, it be so hard for me to not jump in immediately to deescalate a behavior. However, I have learned that this is not even helpful & actually does more harm than good (obviously unless necessary, where my tech needs support). Allowing my techs to deescalate behaviors on their own, not only allows me to provide them w/ positive reinforcement, it also allows me to provide any feedback on areas they could touch up on, it allows me to see if there are pieces of the behavior plan that isn’t effective, and gives me peace of mind to know my techs/ clients are more likely to remain safe during sessions in my absence. This gives my techs confidence to respond to a behavior and not be hesitant, one second of hesitation can quickly result in a crisis situation that could’ve been avoided! #appliedbehavioranalysis #bcba #aba #rbt #fyp
