Beppu is a hot spring city in Oita Prefecture, known for its geothermal activity and clouds of steam. It’s one of the main onsen destinations in Kyushu and easy to combine with nearby towns like Yufuin. Where it is: Beppu is located in Kyushu, on the east coast, about 1h10 minutes from Yufuin and around 2h10 from Fukuoka. How to go: Beppu is easy to reach by train from Fukuoka or Oita. Renting a car is convenient if you’re exploring Kyushu or combining Beppu with more rural areas. Important note about the Beppu Hells: I don’t recommend visiting all the Beppu Hells. Some of them, especially those involving animals (like fish or crocodiles), personally felt uncomfortable to me and look like animal mistreatment in my opinion. Bassins d’eau turquoise, mares rouge sang, vapeur qui s’élève partout… ici la nature montre toute sa puissance. Chaque “enfer” a sa couleur, son atmosphère, presque sa personnalité. On ne vient pas pour se baigner, mais pour observer ce spectacle naturel unique qui fait la réputation de Beppu. Ce qui marque le plus, ce sont les contrastes : la beauté des couleurs… et la chaleur qui rappelle que ces lieux portent bien leur nom.
