ROHere is a crazy cool carnivorous plant! An aquatic bladderwort, U. olivacea forms thick algae-like mats near the surface of still ponds. Bladderworts use specialized suction traps that capture minute animals. The first time seeing this species, @whenleifgivesyoulemons showed me an amazing spot with lots of bladderworts and sundews! Credit to finding this plant goes to him. The last images are macro shots of individual flowers - tiny!!!

QE🌿 Utricularia longifolia, a carnivorous plant (more information below) ⬇️
✨ Origin and habitat
This carnivorous plant is endemic to Brazil, where it grows in humid areas on nutrient-poor soils, often in peat bogs, wet rocky outcrops, and forest edges. Like all bladderworts, it has evolved a unique trapping system to compensate for the lack of nutrients in its environment.
🌸 Impressive flowering
• The flower stalk can reach 30 to 60 cm tall, sometimes more under ideal conditions.
• It usually carries 3 to 10 large purple flowers, each measuring 5 to 7 cm in diameter.
• The flowers, reminiscent of orchids in both shape and color, are among the largest in the entire Utricularia genus.
• Flowering is often triggered by strong light and a marked difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.
🪰 How it traps prey ?
• Bladderworts do not have visible carnivorous leaves like Venus flytraps or pitcher plants. Instead, they use tiny bladders (1–5 mm, underground or underwater) that act as vacuum traps.
• When microscopic prey (protozoa, rotifers, larvae, micro-crustaceans) touch the sensitive hairs, the trap door opens and the prey is sucked inside in less than a millisecond.
• This makes it one of the fastest mechanisms in the entire plant kingdom.
💡 My personal growing method
• Substrate: sphagnum moss mixed with perlite
• Water: only reverse osmosis water (or demineralized or rainwater), with a permanent water tray (2-3cm)
• Winter (in France): grown in a terrarium, under strong full-spectrum LED lighting.
• Spring/summer: once temperatures reach +10°C both day and night, I move it outdoors with my Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula), in full sun and standing in water.
• The outdoor sun exposure + day/night temperature shifts stimulate flowering.
🔎 Why grow it?
Utricularia longifolia is not only rare and stunning but also surprisingly easy to grow.
With the right setup, anyone can succeed with this species.
And when it blooms, it’s a truly gratifying and spectacular show that rewards your patience.

Bladderwort uses tiny underwater suction traps called utricles that actively pull in zooplankton and small invertebrates in milliseconds. Trigger hairs set off a rapid pressure change, water rushes in, and the trap quickly resets to hunt again.
While bladderwort is a carnivorous plant, spiders are safe. Their traps are microscopic and designed for prey much smaller than an eight-legged visitor. Bladderwort primarily captures water fleas, mosquito larvae, rotifers, and other tiny aquatic crustaceans.
Two traps. Very different strategies.

CRChristmas has come for my aquatic Utricularia. What presents did they get? Endless ostracods.
In the video is a sizable portion of a suspended aquatic species, Utricularia inflata, in my Geosesarma vivarium feasting on ostracods under 365 nm UV light. I don't actually know where these came from, or how they got into my tank. I certainly don't maintain them or create cultures. Nevertheless, my Utricularia is happy and being well fed.

MI🇬🇧 Utricularia, commonly and collectively called the bladderworts, is a genus of carnivorous plants They occur in freshwater and wet soil as terrestrial or aquatic species.
All Utricularia are carnivorous and capture small organisms by means of bladder-like traps. Terrestrial species tend to have tiny traps that feed on minute prey such as protozoa and rotifers swimming in water-saturated soil. The traps can range in size from 0.02 to 1.2 cm. Aquatic species possess bladders that are usually larger and can feed on more substantial prey such as water fleas (Daphnia), nematodes and even fish fry, mosquito larvae and young tadpoles.
Despite their small size, the traps are extremely sophisticated. In the active traps of the aquatic species, prey brush against trigger hairs connected to the trapdoor. The bladder, when “set”, is under negative pressure in relation to its environment so that when the trapdoor is mechanically triggered, the prey, along with the water surrounding it, is sucked into the bladder. Once the bladder is full of water, the door closes again, the whole process taking only ten to fifteen milliseconds !

This rare plant community is home to highly specialized plants that have adapted to wet, acidic, nutrient poor soils. Pitcher plants, sundews, bladderworts and other carnivorous plants are found here, as well as rare orchids and milkweeds. Pitcher plant bogs are associated with the longleaf pine ecosystem and are also fire adapted. Lack of fire, conversion to pine agriculture, and alteration of natural spring seeps are some of the main reasons this plant community is so rare in Texas

THThe Boiling Spring Lakes Preserve is a 6,000-acre natural area located in Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina. This preserve is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, a variety of carnivorous plants such as Venus flytraps, pitcher plants, sundews, bladderworts, and butterworts, as well as orchids and over 400 vascular plant species. It’s one of the most biodiverse places in North Carolina, particularly known for its rare plant and animal species. The preserve is managed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which works with The Nature Conservancy to protect this unique ecosystem. The Boiling Spring Lakes Preserve is not just a haven for rare species but also offers recreational opportunities for visitors. There’s a two-mile trail for hikers. The trail provides an opportunity to explore the diverse habitats within the preserve, including sandy paths, pine forests, and a carnivorous plant bog. In addition to the trail, recreation activities, such as a playground and disc golf course, are available for guests to enjoy.
