Sunapur (also spelled Sonapur) Beach, located in Ganjam district of southern Odisha, is officially recognised as Odisha’s second Blue Flag certified beach, after Golden Beach, Puri. Blue Flag certification is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Denmark, and requires compliance with 33 strict criteria covering water quality, environmental management, safety services, accessibility, and sustainable tourism infrastructure. What makes Sunapur Beach stand out is its planned, low-impact development. The beach has a very clean beach, trained lifeguards, CCTV surveillance, proper waste-segregation systems, toilets, changing rooms, drinking water points, watch tower etc. — features rarely available at undeveloped beaches in India. You can also stay there throughout the year in tents. Let us know in the comments if you wish to book one. Geographically, Sunapur Beach lies close to Berhampur, the commercial hub of southern Odisha, making it easily accessible by road and rail while still remaining largely uncrowded. Unlike heavily commercialised beaches, Sunapur offers a quiet coastline with wide sandy stretches and minimal motorised activity, suitable for families, solo travellers, and eco-tourists. The beach also has a designated picnic area with parking, for a fee. Some vendors are inside the picnic zone, but I wish more aren't allowed. Else it would become crowded and dirty. For travellers looking for a clean, safe, certified, and responsibly managed beach — without the crowds of mainstream destinations — Sunapur Beach is a practical and credible choice.
