In 2022, my cousin found out they were BRCA2 positive, which is a genetic mutation that can be passed down through family and greatly increases the risk of certain cancers. They encouraged me to get tested… and I didn’t rush. I was actually the last in my family to do it.
But when I finally did, I found out I was positive too. That test changed everything. Because once we knew, doctors checked me more closely, and we found out I had breast cancer. I also chose surgery to reduce my risk of ovarian cancer. It’s been a journey I never expected… but I’m so grateful I had the chance to get ahead of it. Early knowledge gave me options. If someone in your family mentions genetic testing, listen. I’m so happy I did. 😊

I had my ovaries removed at 41. Not because I’m a minimalist (though I do love a clean bench top), but because I carry the BRCA1 gene variant. In addition to raising my lifetime risk of breast cancer — which reared its head last year — BRCA1 also increases the risk of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is sneaky. It whispers. And by the time most women hear it, it’s screaming. There’s no reliable screening test which is why women like me are told: “Take them out now or risk never getting the chance.” So I did. Prophylactic oophorectomy. (Say that three times while sipping wine.) Unlike other cancers, there’s no Pap smear or mammogram or ultrasound equivalent for ovaries. Nothing that reliably catches it early. Which is why ovarian cancer still has a 50% fatality rate. Half of all women diagnosed won’t survive. That’s not just a statistic — it’s a warning bell we’re not ringing loud enough. Today is World Ovarian Cancer Day, and this is mr saying: we deserve better. Better research, better resources, better outcomes. And in the meantime? Women in every corner of our globe, from every background, deserve to know. About the risks, the genes, the options. Because silence has never saved us. Please help spread the word! 🩷 #WorldOvarianCancerDay #NoWomanLeftBehind #BRCA1 #BRCA2 #OvarianCancerAwareness #FeministAF #breastcancer #breastcancersurvivors #HotFlashesAndHighStandards

One year ago today 💫 This video is raw and in the moment. It wasn’t traumatic or sad, I had some nerves but I did laugh and smile the whole way through. I didn’t want to loose my hair but I wanted to shave it before chemo took it. On the 1st January 2021 (6 months before I was diagnosed) I got a little brown book and started writing down 3 things I was grateful for every single day and I believe it was my mind and body preparing me for the worst year of my life. I still continue to write down what I am grateful for. The day I was diagnosed, I was grateful for my GP, the technology to detect cancer and living close to the hospital. So from 1st January to the date I was diagnosed, I was grateful for 465 things (155 days X 3) and I don’t think I ever wrote I was grateful for my hair… but yet I didn’t want to loose it. I’m not saying that because I didn’t write down I was grateful for hair that I lost it, but it puts things into perspective. Be grateful for everything you have today because if your not, why should you have it tomorrow? I can honestly say that I am grateful for my cancer journey. It has made me a better person today, I have saved lives and discovered a family genetic fault that will save my mother and sister from cancer and I would do it all again if I had to. Today I woke up with the craziest bed head and I was grateful ❤️ If your about to loose your hair due to chemo, shave it! It felt liberating 👨🏻‍🦲 It will grow back 💜

I carry the BRCA2 gene. I actually didn’t know that I had it until after my cancer diagnosis. Even knowing what I know now, I don’t believe it would have changed the path I chose. I also chose not to have preventative surgery after my diagnosis. This was not a decision I made lightly. I want to be clear that I have nothing but respect for women who have done surgery. Everyone deserves to make the decision that feels most aligned with them. But my story ultimately chose something different. Yes, removing tissue can reduce risk. I read that when I was scouring the internet, binge reading books and asking anyone who would listen to my questions. My dear friend who is an MD and breast pathologist told me to get the mastectomy; I remember her saying on one of our lengthy phone conversations “get it over with and behind you”. And I just couldn’t align even WITH a diagnosis. But my journey led me to learn more about epigenetics the idea that while genes can increase risk they don’t determine DESTINY. Our internal environment matters…Inflammation, stress, trauma, nutrition, lifestyle, toxic exposures, chemicals/ air, water….. it can all influence how genes express in the body. For me, the deeper question became: what kind of terrain did I create for unhealthy cells to thrive? After experiencing heavy events in my life, moldy apartments….my focus shifted. I chose to focus on changing the environment within my body and my life. Reducing stress. Healing trauma. Supporting my immune system. Creating a terrain where healthy cells thrive. Obviously medicine was involved too but yanking weeds and creating a healthy garden was what I kept my eyes on. I talk with so many women in this community. Some carry a cancer gene but have never had cancer. Some have had cancer. And many share how overwhelming the decisions can feel especially when it seems like there is only one “right” path and that’s the funny thing. We don’t belong in a box… so much can happen outside of it. None of this is about certainty or guarantees. It’s simply the path that felt right for me🤍

🎶listen up for more on the phone call I got this week about my genetics screen UPDATE! 💙 cancer genetic testing/screening: while it’s not an ATTENTION grabbing topic like the news of late IT SHOULD BE!! 🧿while only [10-15%] of cancers are linked to a specific familial gene (that number may continue to grow as we learn more!)—it offers an opportunity to FIND CERTAIN CANCERS EARLY when we: ☑️KNOW our family history ☑️SEE a genetics counselor for testing ☑️UNDERSTAND that you are NOT “one and done” (ie well your jeans will not change, our knowledge of the genes associated with cancer is grows each year so you should be tested every few years as new genes get discovered) ☑️and more than anything DONT FREAK OUT—if you carry a gene it does NOT mean “you’re doomed”—in FACT it means that YOU and your docs and craft a plan for screening to FIND AND FIX the cancers EARLY and SURVIVE! . . . #letswomantogether #cancergenetics #cancerscreening #cancersucks #familyhistory #familialcancerrisk #cancerrisk #geneticcounseling #cancergeneticstesting #genetictesting #ovariancancersurvivor #ovariancancerprevention #breastcancerprevention #coloncancerprevention #brca1 #brca2

Embryo Update: 7 out of our 9 embryos made it to blastocyst!!! All 7 embryos have been biopsied and cryopreserved and the biopsies arrived at @rgiscience today. I paid the $5,150 I owed for testing this evening, so tomorrow they should start the testing process. It’ll take about 2 weeks to get the results back. Your prayer are working you guys! This is the highest number of embryos we’ve ever gotten to this stage! We are currently praying for as many chromosomally normal, BRCA Neg embryos as possible! Thank you to @brownfertility for taking such good care of your girl! And a special shout out to Kevin for being the most incredible embryologist out there! God is so dang good you guys! I didn’t choose surgery because I was fearless, I chose it because I wanted more moments like this. 💗 After years of scans, fear, and uncertainty… I’m finally on the other side of my preventative surgeries. In the breast cancer community, you may hear people talking about genetic testing and how important it is especially for those who may be at a higher risk of hereditary cancer. But it can be confusing to understand and tricky to access, especially if you identify with a historically underserved group in the breast cancer community. The Black community is one of those historically underserved groups where genetic testing isn’t often discussed and there are barriers to access for a multitude of reasons. Yet it is a critical diagnostic or preventative tool for Black women as they are unfortunately more likely to be diagnosed with more aggressive types of breast cancer and at younger ages. Take Action, Take Control is a genetic testing initiative and resource for cancer risk in Black women, created by the Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers at @wchospital. Rethink is a proud patient partner on this important project that is officially live as of today! ✨ The goal of this initiative is to empower Black women through awareness and education, including information on: • Why Black women should consider genetic testing • The importance of understanding your family health history • Understanding the genetic testing process and the role of genetic counselling • How to access genetic testing We are excited that a collective of resources focused on genetic testing for Black women now exists, with the hope that Black women will feel more empowered around genetic testing and have a better understanding of their personal risk of breast and other hereditary cancers.
