1. Auchagah's 1731 Map - the oldest surviving map of the Boundary Waters, sketched by a Cree guide named O-cha-gah. It charts a route from Lake Superior into the heart of what we now call the Boundary Waters. This map reminds us that Indigenous groups like the Cree, Dakota, and Anishinaabe have been stewards of this land for thousands of years, long before it was designated as a wilderness area.
2. A Motorized Wilderness - A map showing the potential split proposed by Congressman Oberstar, which could have drastically altered the Boundary Waters. But thanks to the tireless efforts of passionate advocates like Chuck Dayton and others who formed Friends of the Boundary Waters, a grassroots movement led to the 1978 BWCA Act, ensuring the Boundary Waters received the protection it deserves.
3. Path of Pollution - The Boundary Waters still faces new threats, like the proposed copper-sulfide mines that could spread pollution through the interconnected streams and lakes. A detailed map shows the devastating potential impact, highlighting the urgent need to continue the fight to safeguard this irreplaceable wilderness.
