ADIm embarrassed to admit…
That I didnt think a canoe trip would be all that great..! 😱😱
But Im here to tell you, it IS bucket list worthy.
And these are 5 things I learnt on my first canoe trip:
1️⃣ FOOD
If you are sick of carrying freeze dried meals and other hiking snacks - go on a canoe trip. We brought avocados, eggs, cheese and real meat! Its the backcountry version of eating like KINGS!
2️⃣ KNOW YOUR STROKES
Paddling is just paddling right?!? Put you paddle in, and go.
Well yes, and no…
We took half a day with a canoe guide (and epic friend @claudia) to learn some basic paddle strokes and it made such a difference to keeping the canoe on course, and navigating the white water.
3️⃣ WHITE WATER
White water is no joke, and can be dangerous for inexperienced paddlers. At the same time, if you know a little about reading water, have really dialled your strokes, and know how to run a rapid - they are super fun! We did the chute and rollercoaster with an empty boat first (in case we flipped) and then ran it again with all our gear.
4️⃣ YOU CANT PADDLE ALL DAY
Unlike hiking trips, where you might be able to plan for really long days hiking, as un-seasoned paddlers, you just cant paddle for as many hours as you might hike.
Plan for afternoons reading books and relaxing.
5️⃣ DIBS THE FRONT
Us bow paddlers swapped with our stern steerers for a couple of hours, and we never once corrected their steering after that…! 🤣
It actually takes quite alot of micro maneuvering to keep a canoe straight. So, grab the front of the boat, and enjoy a much more relaxing trip… 😅
