Due to the combination of steep rocky shores, strong currents, and an unstable wave system, the Black Sea is considered one of the most unpredictable: it features everything from small capillary ripples to heavy gravity waves and sudden breaking surf that can easily knock someone off balance and drain their strength.
Even experienced swimmers can become trapped: waves pull them back in, and attempts to climb out over wet rocks carry a high risk of injury.
It is precisely these conditions that cause numerous accidents every year along the more turbulent sections of the coastline.
