#ammatoday_books My 9yo's dream in life is to become an animal conservationist and you will find all sorts of animal books on our shelf. What gets repeatedly read however, are books with a strong voice (animal's), strong plot and plenty of heart. These are the top 5 chapter books we have read over and over in the last few years. Katherine Applegate and Holly Webb are authors we would pick with our eyes closed and it has taken conscious effort to break out of that mould and read diverse authors and writing styles. Don't ask me for age guidelines, these are perfect for 6-12 year olds, however I'm an adult in my 30s who enjoys these books as much. So🤷🏽‍♀️ #ammatoday

10 Chapter book series my 5, 7 & 8 year olds LOVE (and I’ve screened them all 👀)⁣ ⁣ Comment CHAPTER BOOKS for a link to our boys’ favourites!⁣ 📚 ⁣ 1. Dog Man – A colourful graphic novel series about a dog-headed cop who fights crime. It’s written in a simple, conversational style with short sentences.⁣ ⚠️ Includes words like “dumb” and “stupid,” and intentional misspellings to look like a kid-made comic. ⁣ ⁣ 2. Cat Kid Comic Club – Cat Kid teaches a group of tadpoles how to make their own comics. The stories encourage growth mindset, teamwork and resilience. It’s inspired my children to get creative with drawing their own comics!⁣ ⚠️ Includes intentional spelling/grammar mistakes, some toilet humour and name-calling. ⁣ ⁣ 3. Secret Seven – classic mystery series where a group of kids solve small-town crimes and have club meetings. Great intro to detective stories!⁣ ⁣ 4. The Naughtiest Girl – Elizabeth vows to be the naughtiest girl at boarding school. However, she changes and there is a lot to learn about friendship and responsibility.⁣ ⁣ 5. Horrible Histories – brings history to life and combines humour with real events. Filled with cartoons, funny illustrations, quirky facts and comic strips!⁣ ⁣ 6. Horrible Science – similar to Horrible Histories, it’s full of weird facts, colourful diagrams and funny explanations.⁣ ⁣ 7. The Bad Guys – black and white graphic novel series about a group of “bad” animals trying to be heroes.⁣ ⚠️ Includes words like “stupid” and “butt”. From about book 10, one of the characters enters a “dark side”. ⁣ ⁣ 8. WeirDo – Weir Do is a quirky kid who navigates school and awkward situations. There are some silly jokes and relatable things for children.⁣ ⚠️ Includes some toilet humour.⁣ ⁣ 9. Diary of a Minecraft Zombie – diary-style storytelling from a 12-year-old zombie as he navigates school, family and friends. My children find the stories funny and probably relatable in some ways!⁣ ⁣ 10. Geronimo Stilton – a colourful, illustrated book about a mouse journalist who travels the world solving mysteries! Sharing my love for books is so important to me and helping my other Christian girlies know where to skip the spice brings me so much joy! I think that as a Christian bookish community we can help each other not feel left out when we aren’t reading all the popular smutty books. I have so many friends that come to me and tell me that they felt bad for reading a book that had so much spice and that they felt terrible about it later. I encourage you to read books that don’t make you feel guilty while reading. Listen to the Holy Spirit and God’s word & when you feel like you are reading something that goes against your faith drop it and move on! I promise you there are so many amazing books waiting to be read by you! We don’t need all the spicy chapter to make a book good 💛💌 If you want to read books that are popular and only have a bit of spice and you want to know where to skip follow me I do my best to share where to skip on those books! 💛 ILY!
