Yamato, a magnificent, snow-white warrior built like a mountain, stood sentinel on the edge of the floe. He wasn't human, nor animal, but the very spirit of the cold, his eyes the deep, endless blue of the polar night sky. He was the appointed Guardian of the Arctic, sworn to protect the fragile life within its domain. A young polar bear cub, barely a year old and still clumsy on the slick ice, had wandered too far. Drawn by the scent of a distant seal colony, the cub decided to bravely swim across a treacherous channel of open water. The swim was short, but the danger was ancient and immense. A shadow, vast and dark, moved beneath the icy water. It wasn't the familiar orca or Greenland shark; this was a primordial terror. It was a Megalodon, somehow surviving in the cold depths, a ghost from a warmer age, its massive jaws lined with serrated teeth, each the size of a man's hand. The cub cried out in a terrified squeal as the colossal shark surged upwards, a churning wave of black water and blinding white belly. Yamato saw the attack instantly. With a roar that cracked the silence and echoed across the ice shelves, he moved. He didn't swim; he willed the ice to his aid. Leaping onto a thick, jutting spire of ice, he focused his immense power. The ice under the Megalodon's path buckled and fractured. A huge, jagged shard of glacial blue ice, as sharp and long as a spear, shot out from the water, narrowly missing the cub but striking the Megalodon's tough snout with the force of a battering ram. The giant shark bellowed a soundless, underwater explosion of rage and pain. It recoiled, momentarily stunned, its attention diverted from the small, defenseless prey to the powerful entity that had dared to wound it. Yamato, without hesitation, plunged into the freezing water. He seized the paralyzed cub gently by the scruff of its neck and, with a few powerful, ice-breaking strokes, propelled them back toward the safety of the main ice floe. The Megalodon, its chance lost, circled once, a massive, vengeful shape beneath the surface, before deciding the fight..

I was wishing winter away today. My hands had gone completely white again from the cold, Raynaud’s doing what it always does this time of year, and I made an offhand comment about it to the guy at the checkout in M&S, “I can’t wait until it starts to get warmer”, when he looked up and said, “I know… but we shouldn’t wish it away.” It caught me off guard, because it was quietly true. We spend so much of our lives wishing time forward, wishing seasons to end, wishing ourselves into a future version of life where things feel easier, warmer, calmer, better. We tell ourselves we’ll enjoy things more then, when the next phase arrives, when the discomfort passes. But longevity, real longevity, isn’t just about adding years to a life. It’s about being present for the one you’re living. In the longest-living communities in the world, purpose and gratitude aren’t just concepts or motivational affirmations; they’re woven into daily life in ordinary, unremarkable ways. Not by pretending everything is perfect, but by recognising that even the inconvenient moments count, even the cold mornings and numb fingers and small exchanges with strangers. Standing there, hands slowly warming as the blood returned, I realised how often we rush ourselves through our own lives without meaning to. We don’t need to fully love every part, but we do need to stop trying to skip them, and remember each moment is important in some way. Because a life you don’t constantly wish away is one you get to fully live in, and that, in the end, might be one of the most powerful habits for a long and meaningful life.

Add the white sugar and light brown sugar, then whisk together until well combined and fluffy. •Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and chocolate chips or chunks. Whisk until fully incorporated. •Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gently mix until just combined, do not overmix. •Portion the dough into 75-80g balls. •Place the cookie dough balls onto a tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes (or overnight for best results). •Preheat oven to 165-170C. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the tops are lightly golden while the centres remain soft. •Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. •Serve warm with ice cream.
