Here are some fast facts about composting protein rich scraps 🐟If you’re wondering whether it’s safe to compost meat or fish waste then the simple answer is: yes. But why is this so? The first reason is heat. The heat generated in a hot compost pile is the number-one killer of pathogens, bacteria and viruses. Thermophilic bacteria should heat your compost to about 60°C which will knock off almost all of the pathogens in the pile. Watch the reel called “How to Hot Compost” pinned on my reels page to learn more.  🐟The second reason is acidity. In both hot and cold compost the microbes produce organic acids causing the pH to drop and the pile to become acidic. This acidic environment is inhospitable to pathogens. (There are a number of other reasons I discuss in detail in my compost book ‘The Compost Coach’). 🐟 Fish & meat waste are highly effective compost activators. These scraps feed the microbial colony in the pile, and to inject extra nitrogen & trace elements to support the microbes’ reproduction. This will fire up your compost fast as it has an extremely high carbon to nitrogen ratio. 🐟 Fish frames & heads are a waste by-product that you can often get for free from fish & chip shops & fish mongers (like we did) 🐟There is no doubt that rotting fish or meat can stink, but if you hot compost it & balance it will plenty of carbon like aged woodchips the smell dissipates fast. 🐟Make sure you bury these scraps in the centre of a compost pile & also make sure there is good airflow around them. Use woodchips and small sticks below and around the fish or meat. 🐟Rodents & other wildlife will be attracted to fish. If this is an issue in your garden make sure the composting system is wildlife proof by using enclosed bins or an in-ground system (see my last reel for rodent proof bays) 🐟Be mindful that fish products have been shown to contain varying amounts of heavy metals, particularly mercury and other pollutants. It’s best to avoid composting species of fish that are long-lived and high on the food chain such as marlin, tuna, shark, swordfish, king mackerel as these species can contain higher concentrations of mercury than others.

If you’re new to hot composting you may feel like a miracle has occurred when you see billows of steam rising from your compost. Well, this heat is actually produced as a by-product of the microbes getting to work breaking down your waste. The amount of heat depends on the size of the pile, or volume of your bin, its moisture content, aeration, & C:N ratio. Decomposition occurs most rapidly during the thermophilic stage of composting (40-60°C), which occurs around 24-36 hours after setting up your new hot compost bin or pile. This period can last for several weeks depending on the size of your pile & your mix of ingredients. In my 400L compost bin it generally lasts for two weeks. This stage is really important for destroying pathogens, fly larvae & weed seeds your compost needs to be 60°C for at least 7 consecutive days to guarantee this. It’s important to note that compost invertebrates (some of the good guys who eat your waste) survive the thermophilic stage by moving to the edges of the pile or becoming dormant. But most species of microorganisms cannot survive at temperatures above 65°C, so it’s important to turn or aerate really hot compost to bring the temperature down. As your compost begins to cool, turning the pile usually will result in a new temperature peak because of the replenished oxygen supply & the exposure of organic matter not yet thoroughly decomposed. After the thermophilic phase, the compost temperature drops, & is not restored by turning or mixing. This is totally normal and to be expected, so don’t get too disappointed when this happens. At this point, decomposition is taken over by mesophilic microbes through a long process of "curing" or maturation. Although the compost temperature is close to the ambient environmental temps during the curing phase, chemical reactions continue to occur that make the remaining organic matter more stable & suitable for your plants. So be patient & you’ll end up with beautiful black gold for your garden. If you want to get hot, steamy & dirty too check out the IGTV called “How to: Hot Compost”.🔥 #compost #hotcompost #composting

Make a wooden compost bay system with me 🤎 I’m continuing my focus on composting, this time showing a slightly larger scale option of a compost bay system 🌱 This is how I built it and some of the high level benefits - I’ll do a little series as to how this progresses over the summer and some of the other goings on in compost corner, but you can already see how my turned material from the first bay is getting on 🥰 (Collab notes - Thank you to Zest who kindly gifted me the second bay to add on to one I’d already bought to support my series on composting!) #composting #compostbay #homecomposting #startcomposting #growyourown #gardentips #gardeninguk

Here are four tips for using a compost tumbler: 1. Balance the ingredients: A good compost mixture should consist of equal parts “brown” (carbon-rich) and “green” (nitrogen-rich) materials. Brown materials include things like dry leaves, straw, and shredded paper, while green materials include things like grass clippings, kitchen scraps, and fresh garden waste. Balancing these ingredients is important to ensure that the compost breaks down efficiently. 2. Keep it moist: The compost needs to stay moist in order for the microbes to break down the organic material. A good rule of thumb is to keep the compost as moist as a wrung-out sponge. If it’s too dry, add some water, and if it’s too wet, add more dry materials like shredded leaves or newspaper. 3. Turn it regularly: A compost tumbler is designed to make it easy to turn the compost, which helps to aerate it and distribute the microbes throughout. Aim to turn the tumbler every two to three days to ensure that the compost breaks down evenly. 4. Be patient: Composting is a slow process, and it can take several weeks or even months for the compost to be fully broken down and ready to use. Be patient and keep adding to the tumbler, and eventually, you’ll have a nutrient-rich compost to use in your garden. #compost #composttumbler #kitchenscraps #foodwaste #composting #organicgardening #sustainableliving #soilhealth #zerowaste #homecomposting #ecofriendly #gardeningtips #reducefoodwaste

That sounds backwards, right? We are told compost bins are the gold standard. Turn it. Water it. Balance greens and browns. Wait months, sometimes a year, and then you finally get to use it. But I realized something. Why was I making my organic matter travel away from the garden just to bring it back later? So I stopped. Instead of piling everything in a bin, I started burying it directly in my garden beds. Kitchen scraps. Garden trimmings. Pulled plants. Leaves. All of it goes straight into the soil, right where roots, worms, fungi, and microbes are already active. No turning. No hauling. No babysitting a pile. Just feeding the soil where the soil actually lives. I dig a hole or trench, bury the materials deep, and cover it back up. That’s it. Underground, it stays moist, protected, and in constant contact with soil life. Things break down faster than they ever did in my bin, and the nutrients are released right in the root zone where plants can actually use them. Instead of waiting months for finished compost, I have soil that is improving in real time. The texture changed first. Darker. Softer. Easier to plant into. Then the worms showed up in bigger numbers. Then the plants responded. Stronger growth. Better resilience in heat. Less watering needed because the soil holds moisture better. I am not managing a compost system anymore. I am supporting a soil system. Everything that grows in my garden goes right back into it. Nothing is stockpiled and forgotten. Nothing is sitting in a corner cooking. The soil eats first and the plants follow. It is lower effort, more natural, and honestly, it just makes sense. If you want to learn exactly how I set this up, where to bury, how deep, what to use, and how to do it safely in an everyday backyard garden, I walk you through it step by step in my soil building guide.
