When the waves in the dock meet, we observe that they continue their course without noticeable changes. This is due to the superposition of waves, where the Disturbances add together temporarily but then continue independently. Furthermore, the conservation of energy ensures that the total energy sum of the waves is not affected by the encounter. Deja Vu II: a favorite work of sculpture in my collection- an astonishing spring powered kinetic art form that hangs on my wall. Crafted from wood this device has two disks, each with a pattern of curved spokes that can rotate at different rates and direction to produce interesting illusions of motion via moiré interference effects. A ribbon spring drives an ingenious mechanism that uses ratchets (and the rotational momentum of the disks) to create the various visual modes- a half rotation of the disks will result in 20+ minutes of motion. With a full loading of the spring hours of motion will ensue. Where the waves arrive in phase, they add up to form bright fringes (constructive interference). Where they arrive out of phase, they cancel out, producing dark fringes (destructive interference). The result is an interference pattern, not just two bright spots—something impossible to explain using a purely particle model of light. The spacing of these fringes is uniform and depends on the wavelength of light, the distance between the slits, and the distance to the screen, confirming the wave nature of light quantitatively.
