AVHow can you get your footing in the cosmetic industry?
1. Get a Bachelor’s degree in something science-related. Some common majors I see are chemistry, biology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmaceutics, etc. Of course it is not impossible to go into the industry with a degree that is more liberal arts focused, but it may be a bit more challenging. Additionally, I wanted to shoutout @utcosmeticsciencemajor, which is one of the only undergraduate cosmetic science programs in the United States, and is where I received my degree in Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design💙💛
2. Get a higher degree in cosmetic science. Although not completely necessary, a higher degree can help you specialize in an area or receive a higher salary.
Some universities that offer Master’s degrees in the US include:
-University of Cincinnati (online)
-Rutgers University (in-person or online)
-Long Island University (in-person or online)
-University of Toledo (online)
Master’s degrees internationally:
-University of Greenwich (UK, in-person)
-London College of the Arts (UK, in-person)
-ISIPCA (France, in-person)

THNatural doesn’t always mean safer. Synthetic doesn’t always mean dangerous. It’s all about the dose. 💉🍃
I don’t usually do stitches, but I was triggered. There’s a lot of fear-mongering online when it comes to fragrance—especially around the word synthetic.
To be clear, I respect Paul Saladino’s work and I follow his advocacy for an animal-based diet. I agree with many of his views on nutrition. But when it comes to fragrance chemistry, this is something I need to clarify.
The “natural vs synthetic” debate is often oversimplified. Many of the ingredients people call “harmful synthetics” actually occur naturally in plants and essential oils. They’re naturally occurring ALLERGENS, not lab inventions. They’re literally part of the chemistry of things like citrus peels and flowers. 🍋🌸
I also hear a lot of “just use essential oils.” It’s worth remembering that essential oils are highly concentrated chemical mixtures. Used undiluted or improperly, they can cause irritation or sensitization—sometimes more so than a professionally formulated fragrance designed to stay within safety limits. ⚠️
There’s also confusion around synthetics like phthalates. Most modern fine fragrance uses DEP (Diethyl Phthalate), which has a very different safety profile from the “bad” phthalates (like DBP) found in industrial plastics. These are not used in high amounts, and they’re not present in all fragrances. They’re studied because they exist across many everyday products—plastics, food packaging, and even medical devices like tubing and IV bags—not because perfume is uniquely dangerous. 🏥
In perfumery, safety isn’t about “natural vs synthetic.”
It’s about chemistry, dose, formulation, data, and biology. 🧪
Responsible makers—working with naturals, nature-derived materials, or synthetics—formulate within strict safety standards. And today, more than ever, the industry is moving toward bio-derived and responsibly developed ingredients. 🌱
