A single beam of white light hits a glass prism and suddenly splits into a perfect rainbow. This is dispersion – the phenomenon in which different colors of light bend by different amounts as they pass through a transparent material. Red light slows down the least, while violet slows down the most, causing the colors to spread into a full spectrum that is usually invisible to us. The same physics explains rainbows, soap bubbles, and even the colorful shine seen on a CD. It is a simple setup, yet it reveals one of the most beautiful principles of optics.
