Most throwers think the discus is all rotation… it’s not. There’s a big linear component that a lot of athletes miss. The walk-through drill teaches this perfectly. Step in line first, don’t rotate early, then flow into your half turn and finish. Think: linear step → half turn. If you over-rotate or lose your line, this drill will clean it up fast. The stand throw is where great discus throws are built. Start by setting up the power position correctly. Your left toe should line up with your right heel. This creates the right angle to move into the throw. From there, shift your weight onto the ball of your right foot and lean slightly back. Get the discus behind the hip so the hips can lead the movement. The sequence matters: hips first, strong block, then let the upper body finish the throw. A lot of athletes try to throw stand throws as hard as possible. Don’t do that. Focus on smooth movement and a clean flight instead. If the sequence is right here, the full throw becomes much easier. Most throwers lose their line before they even release the discus. It starts with how you set up the throw. Pick a point straight down the middle of the sector and lock your eyes on it. Stay focused on that target as you move through the circle. Keep thinking center all the way through. Then at the front, don’t rush it. Work the legs first, stay patient, block the left side, and finish the throw. Good throws aren’t rushed — they’re controlled. Follow for more throws tips. #shotput #discus

Most throwers have heard the term “high point” in the discus… but very few actually understand what it means or how to create it. The high point is simply the highest point in the discus’s orbit as you move through the throw. Ideally, it should happen right as your right foot lands in the middle of the circle during the transition from the back to the front. Why does this matter? A higher discus position creates a longer radius and more time to accelerate the implement. More time accelerating = more speed on the discus when you release it. If the discus stays low, the orbit becomes shorter and you run out of time to build speed, which often leads to weak releases and shorter throws. So how do you create it? It starts with the lower body. As you come out of the back of the circle, stay level and then drive upward off the left leg. That upward push helps lift the orbit of the discus and naturally creates the high point before you bring it back down into the finish. Fix this position and you’ll give yourself more time, more speed, and more distance in the throw. Follow for more throws tips. #shotput #discus

Most high school throwers release the discus too high. And it’s costing them distance. A good target is about a 36° release angle. Slightly lower than what most athletes naturally try to throw. Why? Because the discus isn’t a ball. It’s an airfoil. When you release it a bit lower, the wind can get underneath it and create lift. More lift = more time in the air More time in the air = more distance. So next practice, stop trying to sky the discus. Keep the release lower and let the wind do the work. Your grip sets up the entire throw. If the grip is off, the release will be off — and it can easily cost you 10 meters. Start with the traditional grip. Spread your fingers naturally and place your index finger down the middle of the discus. Wrap the first joints of your fingers around the rim so the discus feels secure, but keep the hand relaxed. Don’t squeeze it. Keep your palm flat on the plate. At the release, the discus should spin cleanly off your index finger. Another option is a modified grip where the index and middle finger sit together down the middle of the discus. This gives you a slightly wider base while still allowing the discus to spin off the index finger. Both grips work. The key is a relaxed hand and a clean spin at release. This mistake is killing your discus distance 👇 A lot of throwers carry the discus way too low in the back—almost down by the knee. That creates a terrible path. It has to go down → way up → then back down again… which usually leads to high, floaty throws that lose distance. In discus, we actually want a slightly flatter release than shot put. That’s where the big throws come from. Simple fix: Hold the discus higher in the back. Think “right angle in the armpit” and keep it more level as you move through the throw. Cleaner path = better flight = more distance. Follow for more throwing tips #shotput #discus

Fix your half turn with this one simple cue. Most throwers are too slow in the middle, and it throws off the entire sequence. Set up with your eyes and upper body facing the middle of the sector. Right foot in the center, left foot behind you. From there, rotate the hips and get that left foot up and down as fast as possible. If you focus on one thing, make it this: quick left. The faster that foot gets down, the easier it is to hit a strong power position and finish the throw. Speed and timing here make everything else work. Follow for more throws tips. #shotput #discus

One of the most overlooked parts of discus throw is the hand carry/grip. If you can’t carry the discus correctly, it’s tough to stay on balance, keep separation, and move confidently through the circle. If the implement feels like it’s slipping, everything else starts to break down. The discus should sit in an L grip, with pressure through the fingers second knuckle . athletes that have trouble holding correctly, we have them place discus in first knuckle and spin that way to keep tension and control if they struggle with the hold as it makes it easier to lock it back and drag it to creat more torque and sling. #trackandfield #shotput #discus #strength #athletics

Most throwers struggle with balance in the discus, and it usually starts right in the wind-up. A simple way to fix it is the continuous wind drill. Wind the discus back and forth in a smooth, relaxed rhythm. As the discus moves back, shift your weight onto your right leg. As you bring it forward to release, move your weight back to your left. This teaches the correct weight transfer and helps you stay balanced before the throw even starts. Better balance in the wind-up leads to better balance through the whole throw—and that leads to more consistent distance. Try 6–10 reps during your warm-up before stand throws. Most throwers rush the finish and lose separation. Try this drill. Place an object just behind the circle. Go through a full throw imitation, but pause when you hit the power position. When you land, lock your eyes on that object behind you. This forces your chest to stay back and your shoulders to stay closed. That separation between your lower body and upper body is what gives you time to accelerate the implement. More separation = more stretch across the torso = more speed at the finish. If your chest is opening early, you’re leaking power before the throw even happens. Slow the drill down. Feel the position. Then start adding speed once you can consistently hit the pause with balance. Follow for more throwing tips. #shotput #discus
