ASThe Racing Heart of Dr. Aston
The sun was setting over the quiet outskirts of the city, but Dr. Aston wasn't headed home for rest. While driving near the old industrial district, he spotted a woman in a dark cloak scurrying away from the train tracks, looking suspiciously over her shoulder.
Curiosity turned into horror when he heard a faint, desperate whimpering.
The Discovery
Dr. Aston rushed toward the tracks and found a heartbreaking sight. A mother Golden Retriever and her tiny puppy were bound together with thick, heavy ropes, tied directly to the iron rails. The mother’s eyes were wide with terror, her body shielding her pup as she licked its face one last time.
In the distance, a low vibration began to shake the ground. The evening express was coming.
The Rescue
"Hang on, girl! I’ve got you," Dr. Aston shouted, his surgical precision kicking into high gear.
He reached into his medical bag, pulling out a pair of heavy-duty emergency shears. The train’s whistle shrieked in the distance—a piercing warning that they had less than a minute.
60 seconds: He sliced through the first knot around the mother’s neck.
30 seconds: The ropes around their legs were tangled and tight. He ignored the scrapes on his hands, focusing only on the fraying hemp.
10 seconds: The blinding headlight of the locomotive rounded the bend, illuminating the tracks.
With one final, powerful snip, the bonds fell away. Dr. Aston scooped up the puppy with one arm and grabbed the mother's collar with the other, throwing his entire weight backward. They tumbled down the gravel embankment just as the massive steel engine roared past, the wind from the train whipping against them.
A New Beginning
After the train disappeared into the night, the silence returned. The mother dog stood up, shaking off the dust, and immediately began nuzzling Dr. Aston’s hand, her tail wagging with frantic gratitude.
The "evil woman" was gone, but the Golden Retrievers were safe. Dr. Aston loaded them into his car, promising them a warm meal and a bed far away from the cold steel of the tracks. He was a doctor of medicine, but tonight, he was a savior of souls.
