One major fail is misjudging the height, leading to an uncontrolled entry or belly flop, which can cause severe bruising or even broken ribs. Improper takeoff—such as slipping on a wet or uneven surface—can result in an awkward fall or head-first impact.
Another danger is hitting underwater rocks due to miscalculating depth, which can lead to concussions, fractures, or even paralysis. Landing incorrectly, like over-rotating or under-rotating a flip, increases the risk of spinal injuries. Cold water shock, strong currents, or unexpected waves can also cause difficulties resurfacing.
Even experienced divers can make mistakes, so checking water depth, practicing safe technique, and knowing the environment are crucial to avoiding dangerous cliff diving fails.

Context: Diving for the first time is basically a battle between your brain and your survival instincts. Even though the instructor explains the form, your body usually decides that a full-force belly flop is the safer option. It's a total breakdown in aerodynamics.
We’re seeing a universal human experience here, everyone thinks they’ll look like an Olympic pro until the moment they actually leave the diving board and gravity takes over. The result is a series of landings that look more like a struggle for survival than a sports maneuver.
These failed attempts are actually a necessary part of the learning process. It’s embarrassing in the moment, but every professional swimmer has a mental archive of belly flops exactly like these. It’s just part of the journey from a beginner to a pro.

Is it a superpower? Well, just for fun, I occasionally like to pretend that it is. I mean, I think it looks cool underwater and it makes me laugh when I am playing around. It also feels kind of funny as the bubbles pass my eyelashes.
.
Ok now lets be a little serious here. Does it affect deep diving?
.
I think for some it definitely has the ability to create some challenges, especially when every bit of air is so precious when descending into the depths on one breath.
.
If too much pressure is applied air will leak out of the tear duct during equalization.
.
For deep diving I always assumed I had a slight disadvantage, thinking I was not able to retain as much air as other divers, providing me with less air to equalize with the deeper I went.
.
Although it can be a challenge, there are solutions.
Some things that I have found that helped me for depth diving:
.
🔅 I have found that applying the right pressure prevents air from leaking out in the depths. That means not forcing equalization and applying just enough pressure to open the eustachian tubes to equalize the middle ear.
.
🔅 Wearing goggles (i.e. fluid goggles) applies some kind of pressure to the eye to help minimize air leakage.
.
🔅 The deeper I am, the surrounding pressure from the water makes leaking less likely.
.
🔅 Keeping the eyes closed during equalization can also help to keep pressure and not let air escape from the tear duct.
.
It isn’t always prefect and the leaking can vary or change on the day. However, so far these things have seemed to work for me on my depth diving journey.
