Role or dramatic play without plastic toys or commercialised stereotypical items
At The Curiosity Approach we search Facebook market selling sites and charity (op shops) to rescue and salvage pre loved furniture and authentic resources.
We look for alternatives to those pink plastic dressing tables, play cots & role play toys.
We offer children authentic dress up items instead of commercialised gender driven costumes.
Elizabeth Sweet a sociologist says that that these pink role play toys can sadly “encourage a culture where gender stereotypes define a way of life for children.”
Instead, at The Curiosity Approach children can act out real life experiences in their play, they use an eclectic array of household resources that represent the diverse mix and blend of cultures within our provision. Instead of a pink plastic teapot and matching plates and saucers 😨
let’s give children REAL resources and stop the pretence that play is just ‘pretend!’
Play is the REAL deal and children deserve opportunities to play without restriction.
Free from the pink and blue gender divide.

If we remove the stereotypical ‘pink’ resources we are removing the barriers to play. We are opening up opportunities for children and removing those limiting beliefs, predetermined attitudes and preconditioning . These are no longer a hinderance in the child’s mind or play space 🙌🏼🎉

I’ve been setting this dramatic play up for the last 4 or 5 years, and it’s always a hit. My big kids still even wanted in on the fun — proof that some play setups never get old! 💛

It’s finally October, which means all things pumpkin are coming out in my Kindergarten classroom! From Halloween to the crisp fall mornings, I love this time of year at school. For my dramatic play stand this month, I turned it into a Pumpkin Stand 🎃 The kids can pretend to pick & sale pumpkins, make pumpkin treats, and even carve a jack-o-lantern. This theme is always a hit in my classroom, the students love it and so do I! I can’t wait to see all of the amazing things the kids create and pretend to play in dramatic play this month! 🍂
