Sucking provides much comfort to babies, something you will realise shortly after your baby is born. Whilst many of us feel very strongly about introducing or not introducing a dummy to our babies, these plans can change quickly.
I love dummies when they achieve something. Today I’m going to look at reasons why you may wish to consider introducing a dummy to your baby.
*Sucking can help get you through those early days of colic/reflux. Sucking turns on a a calming reflex.
*Sucking can help your baby settle to sleep
*Sucking can reduce the risk of SIDS in young babies. The regular sucking can stop them from sinking into the deeper stages of sleep.
*Sucking on a dummy will often see crying reduced or stop.
*Whilst some babies are very particular on the type of dummy they like best, supermarkets/pharmacies stock dummies and are very reasonably priced and easy to replace.
*Sucking may help with pain such as teething/tummy pains.

JUWant to get rid of the dummy?
Look, dummies are GREAT if they are working for you. They can be a great comfort, they can help reflux babies and preemies babies and a whole lot more.
BUT if they become a barrier to sleep that’s when they need to go. If you are doing the dummy run numerous times a night, if your baby keeps spitting it out (maybe they are telling you they don’t want it?!)
The nhs advice is to get rid of them by 12 months, so have a think and if it’s time there’s a few approaches.
1. First of all reduce overall use. Really dummies should only be used for sleep times, so if you are using them at other times first of all reduce this.
2. Cold turkey 🦃
I promise, without a doubt, that your baby will forget they ever had one. If they are over 6 months I would introduce a comforter in advance of removing the dummy. Use alternative settling methods to soothe your baby.
3. A gentle way, and pretty effective for younger babies is to take it out at that moment JUST before they nod off. This way they can get used to the sensation of actually fall asleep without it.
