With so many young birds now making an appearance, I figured I would point out a neat trait seen in certain birds: a stark difference in eye color between young and adult birds. Take the White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus; WEVI) here as an example. While adult WEVIs live up to their name, youngsters that hatched this summer, deemed hatch year (HY) birds, will have dark brown-gray eyes. These look nothing like the crisp, light white-gray eye of adults, or after hatch year (AHY) birds. With fall bird banding efforts near approaching, most HY WEVIs will have an eye color similar to the bird in the first clip, while AHY WEVIs will have an eye color similar to the bird in the second clip. There are always exceptions to the rule, of course, and that is why bird banders utilize a number of characters to draw a conclusion about an individual’s age. This accounts for intraspecific variation, that is the natural variation the can occur between individuals of a single species, such as the minute deviations in the *expected* eye color of HY or AHY WEVIs. Come next year however, the dark eyes of these young WEVIs will now be white-gray as they transition to adulthood. Pretty cool, right? The Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceous) is another great example where young birds having dark brown eyes, while adults have the characteristic reddish eye. Not all birds exhibit eye color differences between age groups. And, we really don’t quite fully understand the reason for eye color change in the birds that do. This is probably due to the fact that a number of very different avian taxa exhibit eye color differences between young and adult birds including some woodpeckers, raptors, gulls, and waterfowl. The underpinnings as to “why” is likely not a black and white answer, but for some species, it could be an adaptation to signal the maturity, and therefore suitability, of a mate. ⇺ ⇺ ⇺ Disclaimer: I am trained and federally authorized under a permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey to band and safely handle birds. Birds are captured-released for the purposes of scientific research. Please refer to my pinned reel from July 21, 2022 for more information about bird banding.

Calling all community scientists! 📣 The 26th annual #GreatBackyardBirdCount starts February 17! 🦉🦢🦆🦅🦃 And whether you’re a budding birdwatcher or a bird-count veteran, you can use your ID skills to help scientists protect birds and the places they need. Participating in the count is as easy as counting the ones in your own backyard—and you can make a difference by counting for as little as 15 minutes. "Take a moment over this long weekend to observe, listen to, and count birds and improve your health, too. Birdwatching and being in nature can reduce stress and improve your mood," says Chad Wilsey, National Audubon Society chief scientist and vice president. Birdathon registration is open! It’s our take on a walk-a-thon only instead of counting miles, you count bird species! Whether you’re a beginner, expert birder, or just bird-curious, Birdathon is for you and all are welcome. Join a team or go solo and see how many birds you can find while supporting bird conservation across the state. One of the best parts? The team names are almost as fun as the event. You’ll find teams like Handled Barred Owls (birding + biking), Varied Lushes (birding + wine), and crowd favorites like Crow Magnons and The Millennial Falcons to name a few. Many of the teams go on half-day or full-day birding adventures so it’s a wonderful way to connect with new people, learn about birds, and enjoy the outdoors, all for a good cause -- helping to support our statewide work to protect birds and wildlife habitat. We hope you will consider joining us this year! 👉Learn more and register: bit.ly/Birdathon2026

The message couldn't be clearer: the 2025 State of the Birds Report is a clarion call to protect birds and nature so that humans and wildlife can thrive. The report finds that long-term bird declines first reported in 2019 are continuing unabated. The birds are calling out for help. Will you take the call? ACT NOW: Help us spread the word and follow along as we post findings and ways you can help #BringBirdsBack (link in bio to learn more) [Video description: cut-outs of birds on the screen with text that reads "ACT NOW for the birds" Birds fade away slowly and text changes to read "BEFORE THEY DISAPPEAR" Fades to black screen which reads "Learn More stateofthebirds.org"]
