Tasmanian echidnas behave very differently. During the winter mating season, males seek out hibernating females and wake them up to mate. Intriguingly, females can put their pregnancy on hold and go back into hibernation. In the wild, the lifespan is believed to be between 10 and 50 years, and up to 50 years in captivity. #tasmania #wildlife #cuteanimals #australia #animallovers

Meet Egg Nog 💛 Egg Nog became an orphan after her mum was sadly hit by a car and didn’t survive her injuries. Puggles (baby echidnas) have a unique feeding method in care — mother echidnas don’t have teats, they produce milk from a secretion patch. To replicate this, we feed Egg Nog using the palm of our hand with a slow-dripped specialised formula that she gently laps up. She’s doing incredibly well and getting stronger every day 💛 If you love the work we do, help feed wildlife like egg nog by clicking the link in our bio and donate to the organisation 🙏 #wildlifeseq #wildlife #caringforwildlife #puggle #echidnas #echidna #australianwildlife #wildlifeofaustralia #milkmoustache #wildlifeawarness #echidnalove

🦔 Did you know that echidnas, those spiky little creatures, have electro-sensory receptors on their snouts? While these sensors aren’t as finely tuned as those found on their platypus relatives, they still play a fascinating role in how echidnas experience the world around them. Imagine them splashing through puddles, possibly sensing tiny electric signals from their surroundings—what a fun way for them to explore! These unique adaptations make every dip in the water an adventure for our echidna friends. _____ 🎥 video courtesy of: @pattomkinswildlife #echidnas #echidna #funanimals #funnyanimals #nature #science #biology #puddle

Today Adam and I went to Healesville Sanctuary and visited the Australian animals. We did the echidna feeding experience, and it was very cute. Four echidnas - Ringo, Sunny, Inga Linga and Lincoln, were fed Womberoo - a soy meat paste that gives them all their nutrients. They poked around in the zookeeper’s shoes. One briefly nuzzled my leg. We learnt: Their tongues are 15 cm long, and comes out of their mouth 100 times a minute. Their spikes are keratin, like fingernaills, and look like they’re braided down the middle of their backs. Echidnas can live until 45 years old. They love to swim. The female echidna doesn’t have teats, or a pouch. She feeds her babies (puggles) through pores on a pouch-like fold of her skin on her tummy. The milk is pink as it is fortified with iron, which is high in fat to ensure quick growth, and helps to prevent infection. Echidnas’ back legs have backward facing feet (angled at 180 degrees), which allows them to dig quickly and deeply to create their burrows. Echidnas are the only Australian animal that doesn’t have an argument - they’re very patient and don’t push each other away when feeding. They’re a monotreme - like a platypus - mammals that lay eggs the size of jellybeans; and their babies hatch from the eggs. It was lovely to watch them eat - I highly recommend you do it if you visit the sanctuary. 🦔 Video: the video starts with echidnas walking around their enclosure. Then the echidnas walk around peoples’ feet, feeding in little pots, looking up, walking around. They sort of wobble from side to side. They are small, round and spiky, with brown fur and yellowish spikes (keratin), and their feet on their back legs face backward. The music is a silly “doo doo do doobeedoo” lyric over piano.

The Tasmanian short beaked echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus setosus! Echidnas are the only mammals on earth other than platypuses that lay eggs!! There are four species of echidna, and all of which can be found on New Guinea, but this species, the short beaked echidna is also found very widespread in Australia, including Tasmania. The females lay one egg per year which is held in a pouch like marsupials. After the egg hatches the young find a milk patch, an area of the abdomen in the pouch that secretes milk. Monotremes don’t have nipples, unlike other mammals. The young, called puggles, live in the pouch until they get too spiny, then live in its mothers burrow. Because the spend lots of time underground, they’ve adapted to tolerate low oxygen levels. They’re also called spiny anteaters because their main prey items are ants and termites which they dig out with their powerful arms and an they have sensitive snouts to smell and detect electrical signals from their prey. They are superb burrowers and dig holes to live in and to hibernate in the cool Tasmanian winters. Monotremes have retained many intermediate features between reptiles and the placental mammals that dominate the earth now. Egg laying is the trait that likely stands out the most, but they also have very low body temperatures (between 86 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, much lower than other mammals other than platypuses. Their body temp can also drop to about 40 degrees F when in hibernation. Though they have some ancient reptile traits, they’re still very much mammals, the uniting features of all of us being three inner ear bones, hair and of course, mammary glands, which is why mammals are called mammals! So freaking excited to see this animals. I’ve wanted to see one ever since watching Steve Irwin back in the late 1990s. Of those who know me well, you know he is my hero and the reason I am the way I am today.
