Electrolytes matter. They’re essential for fluid balance, nerve signalling, and muscle contraction. But unless you’re training hard, sweating heavily, or have identified high sodium losses, your daily diet already provides more than enough sodium. Salt, bread, dairy, sauces, processed foods, and even sports drinks all contribute to your daily sodium intake. For most athletes, additional electrolyte supplementation isn’t necessary outside of training and racing. Where these supplements can make sense is during long, hot, or high-sweat efforts, especially if you’re a heavy or salty sweater. Before taking salt “just in case,” ask yourself: • How much sodium am I actually losing? • How much am I already consuming? • Do I understand my overall fuelling strategy? I also want to address the growing popularity of very high-sodium products marketed for daily use (I’m looking at you, LMNT 👀) For most people, adding large amounts of sodium outside of training, especially “just in case”, isn’t necessary. More sodium does not automatically mean better hydration. Context matters. Electrolyte supplementation should support your training demands, not become a daily default without a clear reason. @seanfitzness 🤝 Most of us already get plenty of electrolytes from food. Unless you’re sweating buckets for 2+ hours in the heat (or your doctor specifically told you otherwise), you don’t need them. Water works just fine. Plus people on average already eat double the recommended sodium. So chugging electrolyte drinks “for health” is like drinking double cream for calcium. Yeah sure, it’s in there, but you’re also taking on a load of saturated fat whilst doing so. Some drinks have 1,000mg of sodium per serving. That’s HALF your daily limit in one hit. Don’t fall for the hype. 90% of people taking electrolytes don’t need them and the extra sodium could actually put you at risk.

Do we really need electrolyte supplements? I compared them to BCAAs because they were the previous ‘sexy’ supplement everyone bought, audacious claims but when you broke them down there is no real benefit for your average joe. Now its electrolytes, everyone is buying and using them regularly which is a great way for us to increase our water intake, the sodium in them makes us want to drink more making it easier for people to achieve their water intake targets for the day. But does the average Joe who trains a maximum of 1 hour per day need electrolytes? Probably not. Our habitual diets are typically higher in salt than the recommended safe limit of 6g. Start adding more salt in there and we’re providing ourselves some potential cardiac risks. If you eat no processed foods, limit adding salt to your meals and rarely eat out then these electrolytes could be of used to you - but people rarely follow all of those factors when it comes to their diet. Examples of people that really need electrolytes: - Endurance athletes that train for over 2 hours per day, high sweat loss which incurs sodium losses too - Athletes training in warmer climates with higher sweat rates again resulting in high sodium losses - Combat athletes after a water cut for a day before weigh in need their fluids post weigh in to be a specific concentration of electrolytes to support rehydration - Ultra endurance athletes racing need the correct concentration of sodium in their water to allow for optimum hydration during events, get it wrong and it can lead to hyponatremia or hypernatremia - neither are fun to experience These supps are marketed extremely well, people struggle to hit their water demands so an easy way to do it is make water taste nice with zero calories and add something in it (sodium) to make us drink more. Supplement companies walking around like this 🤑 If you’ve got the money by all means go for it, but for me I think they’re a bit pricey for what they provide and unless you’re doing serious exercise pursuit you likely don’t need em. If you’re unsure on whether you need them feel free to give me a message and we’ll give you some guidance 🤝

Use the colour of your urine to guide how hydrated you are = we’re aiming for pale yellow / straw coloured urine 🌟 3. Electrolytes are essential for many bodily processes, but that doesn’t mean we need an electrolyte supplement, as we actually get a tonne of electrolytes from food! ➡️ Situations where you may need electrolytes are: - if you have certain medical conditions like POTS - you’ve had gastro - you’ve lost a large amount of sweat through a sauna, exercising for several hours, exercising in the heat, or you work a physical job outside in the heat ✅ Then having more electrolytes either through food or supplements (because remember we can can get a lot through food alone) may be helpful Any questions, let me know 😊
