Before you reflexively say “the world has tons of problems!” (which is true), you should know that all the lab data and naturalistic (real world) data point to the existence of a sort of “distress homeostasis” in each and every one of us.

Meaning, what we consider challenging and what we feel we are capable of, and our sense of gratitude and joy is determined in large part by how easy or hard our daily life is. That’s a giant “duh!”

This is the counterintuitive part:
How people rate the level of challenge and number of problems in their life is largely determined by how challenging the preceding days, months, or even hours were. People emerge from challenge feeling a ton of gratitude and joy in small things …and within a month or so are back to their normal baseline or set point of what they consider a problem.
