🧠✨ Why brain‑hand games are a powerhouse for your brain This content is for educational purposes only. My goal is to raise awareness about public health trends and provide tools that support neuroplasticity and cognitive reserve. These exercises are not diagnostic, predictive, or preventative, and are not intended to prevent, treat, or diagnose any medical condition. Performance on these exercises does not indicate cognitive status or disease risk. Brain‑hand games are not random fun, they’re designed to activate many brain networks at once and train your focus, attention, and executive skills. Tasks involving manual dexterity and cognitive challenge increase activation in the prefrontal cortex a key hub for attention, planning, and executive control. By engaging both motor and cognitive systems simultaneously, these dual‑task activities stimulate communication across brain regions including the prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and cross‑hemisphere integration via the corpus callosum This kind of training doesn’t just exercise one skill, it boosts cognitive reserve and neuroplasticity by forcing the brain to adapt, reorganize, and build stronger connections over time. Some studies on dual‑task and manual dexterity training suggest that when the brain balances motor control and cognitive effort together, it can improve executive functioning and neural efficiency. Duration & frequency matter depending on the goal: Short bouts (1–2 minutes) can be useful for immediate focus, attention shifting, and nervous system regulation. For longer-term cognitive benefits, intervention studies commonly use 20-60 total minutes 2-5 times per week. This isn’t always practical so I recommend breaking it into 10–15 minute sessions, 3–5 days per week. Both approaches can be valuable when used intentionally. Soul Friend, 🌿✨🪬 If you live with complex PTSD, your brain didn’t fail you. It adapted—early, intelligently, and with love for your survival. Let me explain this gently. Deep inside the brain is the amygdala. 🧠 Think of it as your smoke alarm.🚨 Its job is to notice danger and react fast. When a child grows up in an environment that feels emotionally unsafe— not always because of abuse, but because safety was unpredictable— that smoke alarm learns to stay extra sensitive. Then there’s the hippocampus. 🧠 This is the part of the brain that helps store memories and understand time. When stress is constant, the hippocampus can struggle to sort past from present. That’s why old feelings can rush in and feel current, even when you know you’re an adult now. And at the front of the brain is the prefrontal cortex.🧠 This is the part that helps with thinking things through, calming yourself, making decisions, and staying present. It’s also responsible for executive functioning—things like focus, planning, and emotional regulation. When the brain is stuck in survival, this part goes offline. Not because you’re broken—but because your body is prioritizing protection over logic. This is how people with complex PTSD end up living in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. The brain learned early that staying alert was safer than relaxing.🧠 None of this means you’re damaged.🥺 It means your nervous system learned what it had to learn. And here’s the hopeful part: the brain is changeable.🧠 With safety, understanding, and compassion, these systems can soften and rewire. If this helped something make sense—not just in your head, but in your body— follow me @soulsurgerywithandrea for insight, personal stories, and a safe space for healing. And if you want help understanding whether what you’re experiencing is Complex PTSD, you can book a CPTSD Clarity Call™ in my Stan store—along with other gentle ways to support your nervous system. Everything is at the link in my bio. With love and light and radical healing, ❤️‍🩹 Andrea 🌿✨🪬🥹🤗🤍 #complexptsd #brainandtrauma #nervoussystemhealing #traumaeducation #healingwithcompassion

I had no idea this was even a thing. It was only after I was diagnosed as autistic this summer that I came across “bottom-up processing” and “executive functioning”. And once I learned more, so many everyday struggles finally made sense. Most neurotypical people use “top-down processing.” They see the Big Picture first. So “clean the bathroom” is just… one task. My brain? It sees every single detail first. Every step has its own step. So “clean bathroom” for me becomes: Get the cloth. Should I cut it in half to save money? Do I clean the toilet first or last? Would it be more logical to clean all the toilets in the house at once? Okay… toilet first. But what order? Seat? Handle? What’s the “correct” way? It’s a total mental traffic jam. I used to think I was just procrastinating. But now I know it’s a combination of how my brain takes in data and how it manages it. Because of Bottom-Up Processing, my brain doesn’t naturally “filter out” the unimportant parts. I see the limescale on the tap, the dust on the skirting, and the smear marks on the mirror all at the exact same volume. Then, because of Executive Functioning, I struggle to put those thousands of details into a logical sequence. Realising this has been such a relief. It’s not a flaw, it’s just how my brain manages data. If this sounds suspiciously familiar… you’re definitely not alone. Do you wait for urgency to get things done?? Well that makes sense. People with ADHD often struggle with executive functioning, basically, planning, organizing, and initiating tasks. As a result, individuals with ADHD may struggle with procrastination and have difficulty completing tasks in a timely manner (ahem … 👀) So what drives us? Well some of the time it’s URGENCY. Having a sense of urgency or a deadline helps us focus and complete tasks. The pressure of time constraints can provide a sense of structure and motivation. Buuuuuuut, relying solely on external urgency as a strategy to complete tasks may not be sustainable or effective in the long term. So how do we create our own urgency? Timers can be a great (low stakes!) way of finding urgency. The climbing down of the time blocks, breaking down tasks into working chunks, and the oh-so-well-deserved rest in between. Have you tried the MagicTimer yet? #drsasha #adhd (Remixed with @erich.withanh)

Every time, it happens. Every time, I am freshly shocked. If only someone would save me from the natural and foreseeable consequences of my actions. This one goes out to all us pitiful souls syncing family calendars, pursuing PhDs in 59 different sports apps, using our highest octane executive functioning to coordinate car pools, and generally regretting every decision we’ve ever made. @lovelyluckylife

As a human living with ADHD and a therapist treating humans with ADHD- I can confirm the importance of keeping my space de-cluttered and tidy. Research shows an unkempt space can cause stress and anxiety for those with ADHD, which may further exacerbate executive functioning challenges. I try my best to start each morning with 30min- 1hour of cleaning / tidying while I drink my coffee to help set me up for success in my day. When a school states that "There is no academic impact” or “There is no academic need.” as the reason for ineligibility, remind them that is not the legal standard under IDEA. Eligibility for an IEP is not based solely on grades, test scores, or whether a child is passing classes. The law looks at educational impact and whether the disability creates a need for specially designed instruction to access education. Education is much broader than a report card. Educational impact can include things like difficulty with attention, executive functioning, behavior, regulation, communication, social interaction, or the ability to participate in instruction throughout the school day. A student may be earning passing grades while still struggling significantly to access the curriculum, keep up with expectations, regulate in the classroom, or demonstrate what they know. Sometimes students compensate. Sometimes parents provide extensive support at home. Sometimes teachers accommodate informally. None of those things mean the disability is not impacting education. The question under IDEA is not simply “Is the child failing?” The question is “Is the disability impacting the child’s ability to access and benefit from their education in a way that requires specialized instruction?” When teams reduce eligibility to test scores or grades alone, they are narrowing the conversation far beyond what the law actually requires. *Disclosure: All name, schools, and identifying details have been removed or altered to protect privacy. You ever watch your teen do something that technically works… but also makes you want to scream into the vast openness of space? This is what happens when our nervous system is already maxed out from the 400 other things we’ve done today, and then our teen “finds a shortcut” that just means more cleanup later. Our brains read it as disrespect or laziness, but really—it’s often just underdeveloped executive functioning and problem-solving in action. Pause. Breathe. Before you react, try this: “Hey, I get the logic, but let’s talk through why this ‘solution’ doesn’t work long-term.” (avoid the sarcastic tone) You can even invite them into brainstorming a real time-saver together. Because parenting isn’t about the peanut butter knife. It’s about building skills and staying regulated.
