We’ve shared a lot about jade, but many people still ask: what actually counts as real jade?
There are only TWO true types of jade:
• Jadeite�• Nephrite
Jadeite is what most people think of when they hear “jade.”�It’s known for its vibrant colors, strong structure, and unique patterns.�It can be found in several places like Myanmar (Burma), Japan, Russia, and Guatemala.�But the finest jadeite in the world comes from Burma — famous for its rich color and one-of-a-kind beauty. This is what people often call “Fei Cui” (翡翠).
Nephrite is often called “soft jade.”�It’s a little softer than jadeite but still very durable.�It comes from many regions, especially Hetian in China, as well as Russia, Pakistan, Japan, and even areas near rivers in North America.�The highest-quality nephrite from Hetian is known as “mutton fat jade” (羊脂玉), prized for its smooth, creamy texture and high value.
So when people ask, “Is this real jade?”�Remember — real jade means either jadeite or nephrite. Both are natural, both are beautiful, and both have their own story.
