We ran this spaceframe chassis through a crash simulation in Altair Radioss to understand how it behaves under impact. Not to tick a compliance box, but to get real insight into load paths and energy absorption. Once you can see where the energy is going, you can start to control it. Watch the front structure start to fold, members buckle, joints load up. Even the rims and pressurized tyres are modelled here and you can see how that influences the results as well. Some areas do exactly what you want - progressive deformation, soaking up the energy. While other areas such as the occupant cell deform very little, which is exactly what we wanted. This was only achieved after a few iterations though… the first cut of this design didn't perform nearly as well, but that's the whole point of doing this type of analysis. You don’t always need a full OEM-level model to make better engineering decisions. A well-built, targeted simulation can give you direction early in the design process. Where to add strength & stiffness, where to allow movement, and how to manage energy throughout the structure. 2D FINITE-DIFFERENCE 📈 In the previous post, the approach of 1-Dimensional Finite-Difference was discussed. Can this be extended to 2-Dimensions? YES! As discussed Finite-Difference is a technique of solving Differential Equations, that interprets derivatives as telling the solution how to change from one point to the next. If you chop up the region you are solving into a grid, you can get equations at every point, of how the solution at *this* point, depends on the solution at the points around it. These look like linear equations, and so you can solve all of these equations together, and get an approximate solution to the equation! In 2-dimensional finite-difference, these linear equations don't only depend on the point ahead and behind, but also the points to the left and right of the point you care about! Notice how as the number of dots increases, the FD solution (in the wireframe) approaches the exact solution (the transparent overlay).
