One of the most common things I hear: "Can't we just pick a nice font?"
As a graphic designer, I know there's no such thing as "just a font." Every typeface carries a hidden language, whispering messages about your brand before a single word is read.
The Psychology of Typefaces:
Serif Fonts (like Times New Roman): Often convey tradition, authority and reliability. Think law firms, prestigious universities.
Sans-Serif Fonts (like Helvetica, Arial): Modern, clean, accessible and versatile. Tech companies, startups often use these.
Script Fonts: Evoke elegance, creativity or a personal touch. Great for luxury goods, event invitations.
Slab Serif Fonts: Bold, strong and confident. Think headlines, industrial brands.
Choosing the right font isn't a random aesthetic choice; it's a strategic decision that impacts trust, readability and the overall perception of your business. It's about matching your brand's personality to its visual voice.

JEChoosing a typeface can be about beauty and looking good, but it can also be a great way to evoke feeling or emotion or personality into your work. If you’re choosing a simple typeface like Helvetica that lacks personality, I recommend having other elements of the brand that bring uniqueness or personality or emotion into the work. However sometimes the type choice itself can do that heavy lifting of being the unique element of the design that ties into the brand personality or strategy. This was actually the inspiration behind starting our own type foundry @typeoffeeling . We wanted to create retail fonts that were timeless but still had a lot of feeling and emotion. There are tons of other great foundries out there too, to find beautiful type. To list a few: panagram panagram, Klim type foundry, commercial type, grilli type, oh no type co, colophon foundry, dinamo, 205tf, vj type, nodo type foundry, vocal type. BUThere are fonts I’ve loved since I was 12.
And I’m 37 now.
Avenir. Courier New. Futura. Sackers Gothic.
Classics.
Typography trends come and go; high-contrast serifs, quirky display faces, experimental scripts. But these? They always return. They always work.
There’s something about classic type that carries a quiet authority. A traditional elegance. A sense of permanence.
I don’t use them all the time, as overuse makes anything lose its magic. But they’re my trusted fallbacks. The ones I come back to time and time again.
I’ve been working with these typefaces for 25 years. That’s a long relationship. And honestly, typography has always been a little obsession of mine.
Because type isn’t just decoration.
It’s tone.
It’s psychology.
It’s communication before a single word is read.
Timeless design isn’t loud. It endures. And the right typeface can carry a brand further than any trend ever could.
