RHFrostbite: What to do next
If skin becomes pale, numb, hard, or waxy after cold exposure, frostbite may have occurred.
What to do:• Get out of the cold and protect the affected area • Rewarm slowly using body heat or warm (not hot) water • Keep the area clean and dry • If the skin turns black or blisters appear, tissue damage may be present — gently cover with a clean bandage • Seek medical care as soon as possible

The Discovery
Aston approached with caution, his breath misting in the sub-zero air. As he got closer, he saw the problem: the mother leopard's rear paw was caught in a rusted, illegal snare. She bared her teeth, a low growl vibrating in her chest, but her eyes were clouded with exhaustion.
Beside her, a tiny, fuzzy cub let out a high-pitched mewl, shivering against its mother’s flank.
"Easy now, girl," Aston whispered, his voice steady. "I’m not the enemy."
The Rescue
It took hours of patient maneuvering. Using a mild sedative dart to calm her, Aston was finally able to work.
The Injury: The snare had cut deep into the muscle, and infection was setting in.
The Treatment: He sterilized the wound, applied a regenerative salve, and wrapped it in a high-tech, waterproof binding.
The Recovery: Realizing they wouldn't survive the coming blizzard in their weakened state, Aston transported them to his secluded research station nearby.
A Temporary Home
For three weeks, the clinic's recovery bay became a mountain sanctuary. Dr. Aston watched through the glass as the mother slowly regained her strength. He fed them nutrient-rich meals, and soon, the cub began to see the doctor as a friend, often pouncing on Aston’s boots during check-ups.
One evening, the mother leopard stood up and placed her weight firmly on her healed paw. She looked at Aston—not with aggression, but with a piercing, golden-eyed stare of recognition.
Return to the Wild
The release was quiet. On a high plateau overlooking the valley, Aston opened the transport crate. The mother leopard stepped out, sniffed the crisp Alaskan air, and let out a soft huff to her cub.

Frostbite can set in below 0°C, but wind chill accelerates the process.
❄️ What are the signs?
Early signs: Red or pale skin, numbness, waxy appearance.

- Around -6°C: 30 minutes
- Below -28°C: Under 10 minutes
