•Be open to new research and new perspectives
ABA has evolved from the days of rigid Behavior Modification methods and it’s important that as clinicians, we are always looking to evolve as well.
•Collaborate with other disciplines, keep a pulse on what is working and what isn’t, and use the foundational knowledge you’ve acquired in behavior science to shape your own therapeutic approach.

What kind of BCBA are you??
Basically I am a school based BCBA who is compassionate and trauma informed, I love my greens, and prioritize keeping my learners happy relaxed and engaged. I like to problem solve as a team and show flexibility in my plans. I focus on reinforcing the adult behaviors as they implement plans and model for them as much as possible. I always try to get to the root of the problem while prioritizing safety for everyone.
NOT I am not clipboard and data obsessed, I don’t focus on compliance and robotic responses or implementation, I don’t believe my learners should do things just because I said so and my plans are not a one size fits all type of plan. I don’t believe in yelling at learners, and I won’t make you figure it out on your own. I’m not a my way or the highway type of BCBA who believes in punishment procedures over reinforcement, and I most likely won’t tell you to ignore the child it’s just for attention.

Think of this problem of passing your exam like the behavior boss you are:
What is the one behavior or skill that needs to be mastered?
ANSWERING TEST QUESTIONS CORRECTLY
You could memorize the entire Cooper book and take every study guide and course that exists, but STILL not have the skill of answering questions correctly mastered.
You can't improve that skill without PRACTICE and DATA 📈 👩🏼🏫
A quality mock exam, with great explanations/feedback is IMO, the MOST valuable tool you can spend money on as you prepare to slay this beast.
Instead of trying to study the ENTIRE Cooper book and buying every study guide and course under the sun, first take a high quality mock exam when you first start studying. Don't judge yourself about the score - just use it as baseline data. 📈👩🏼🏫
This will allow you to find out what areas you're struggling with and it will help guide any future purchases of study material based on your ACTUAL need.
For most people this really helps alleviate the decision fatigue and overwhelm about how much content is really covered on this exam.
Take another mock exam or even 2 more before your real exam to make sure you've hit mastery criteria 🎯.

MA⭐️ My #1 Tip for the BCBA exam ⭐️
People always ask me for tips for taking the BCBA exam and here is the one thing I always say:
Use the dry erase board they give you!
Here’s how -
🌈 Before you even start, number 1-150 on the dry erase board (there are 150 questions). Next come up with a code. For me, I put a check if I was confident, a box if I wanted to go back and check, and a question mark if I had no idea. This helped me remain confident throughout testing because I was sure of more answers than I thought!
🌈 Use previous questions to your advantage. Sometimes questions will have definitions or formulas in them. Write them down in case you need to reference them later.
🌈 Write down any other acronyms or pieces of info that you don’t want to forget. Is there is a formula you get mixed up? Write it down before you even begin!

RAI’ve had many different jobs since I started in the field of ABA 13 years ago, but honestly - what I’m doing now feels the most like “me.”

CRABA therapists that are dedicated to this field will probably find it frustrating when they hear others say this….
THIS is WHY: they have dedicate years to studying behavior analysis, learning how to assess, intervene, and help individuals develop meaningful skills that improve their quality of life.
First, ABA therapy is data-driven and individualized. Every session is built around specific goals tailored to the client’s needs, whether it’s communication, social skills, emotional regulation, or independence. It’s not just about keeping a child occupied—it’s about actively working toward progress.
Second, ABA therapists are trained professionals, not just supervisors keeping kids entertained. They analyze behaviors, adjust interventions, and use evidence-based strategies to help individuals gain functional skills. Dismissing their work as babysitting ignores the complexity and impact of what they do.
Lastly, the assumption that ABA is just “watching kids” downplays the emotional and mental effort therapists put in daily. They handle resistance, burnout, and the weight of knowing how crucial their role is in shaping someone’s future. Reducing their work to mere supervision is a disservice to both the therapists and the clients who rely on their expertise.
If you are a parent, please make sure to ask the right questions to get the good ones ! And if you are a therapist, keep this in mind because it is all of our responsibility to model what ABA really stands for.
