First of all, I do want to say that this is based on my own personal recommendation and relative to the path I took which benefitted me in my 10 years career from now.
But if any of these steps make you feel uncomfortable, please choose a direction that fits you better. In the end it's all about fueling your passion. Because when you fuel your passion, growth will come naturally. 🫶🙌
1️⃣ Pick an engine or start modding a game
Choose something that excites you and sparks curiosity
2️⃣ Learn programming fundamentals
It may feel like a step back, but fundamentals matter. Pick a language you are interested in like C++ or C#
3️⃣ Make simple games from scratch
This helps you understand how systems actually work
4️⃣ Experiment with math
Visualizing math through programming makes it more fun and intuitive
5️⃣ Practice OOP and SOLID principles
These concepts come up again and again in game development
6️⃣ Learn version control systems
Tools like Git help you store, track, and share your projects
7️⃣ Learn both Unity and Unreal Engine
Spend time prototyping and following tutorials in each
8️⃣ Choose one engine and stick with it
Focus on one engine for about a year to build depth
9️⃣ Learn about design patterns
They help you write clean, efficient, and scalable code. Game Programming Patterns is a great book to start with
