Why is this rough Zambian emerald graded C & not B by @gemfields please switch the sound on for the answer. Cleaning, sorting, grading is how a miner/mining company can enhance the value of their production. Cleaning means removing the fragments of the host rock (biotite schist in this case), which are the dark bits we see still stuck to the surface of the emerald. This is all carefully done by hand so the emerald is not damaged. The meticulous manner in which this rough emerald has been cleaned by the Kagem team enables the buyers to see inside the rough stone. This is important as they need to assess what is the final yield they will get after cutting. What could be the possible color, clarity, crystal quality, weight of the final piece or pieces? The better they are able to answer these questions, the more comfortable & confident they will be with their bid. But this is not all. There are a few other factors. Stay tuned to find out. it was only last week that i had the most unforgettable experience of visiting @gemfields Kagem Emerald Mine! after visiting the CHAMA open pit mine, next stop was visiting the sort house! again we were granted special access to take our phones inside the facility and film the emeralds that were recently arrived at the sort house. The emeralds are transported to the sort house from the mine and here they get cleaned and sorted based on size and quality. In partnership with Gübelin, Gemfields offering provenance proof of their emeralds which provides traceability using customised DNA-based nanoparticles enabling traceability of emeralds back to the exact place of mining. In addition to provenance proof, Gemfields has their own grading system that is widely accepted by the trade and allows them to offer matching parcels of rough emeralds during auctions. here i am holding two of the premium quality emeralds, exceptional in every aspect, also the fact that these treasures have been buried for 500 million years and this is the first time sun shines through them is simply magical. Truly honoured to have seen such a GIANT (Almost 1 metre) Emerald Specimen from the Kagem mine, Kafuba Area, Zambia. Mined by @gemfields and currently on loan for display. This is probably the largest preserved cluster of naturally occurring emerald crystals in the world. This is visible in the Vault @natural_history_museum Something like this truly is priceless. Because of Gemfields Emeralds have become more accessible to a lot more people, providing a consistent large supply of quality emeralds at better prices than other mines. Currently Zambian emeralds are the most affordable emerald in the market, and most accessible. This material has a similar hue to the material coming out of some newer mines of Chitral, a fascinating parallel in emerald geology. WAIT FOR IT….. QUALITY OF THESE EMERALDS! 💚 Spending time in the Sort House at Kagem Emerald Mine was one of my favorite parts of the trip! This is where the rough emeralds are cleaned, and sorted by size and quality. Massive thanks to @gemfields for this once in a life time experience. To be able to get hands on with the process like this is truly incredible. Seeing the work - most of which is manual - required to produce a single emerald astounds me. And these gems have been buried for millions of years, witnessing them seeing the light of day, being held by humans for the very first time…. It’s an unforgettable experience. Fun fact: 8.8 MILLION carats of emerald production was realized in the first six months of 2022. Waiting for the figures for the second six months, but what KAGEM mine and @gemfields have achieved is truly setting the bar for the mining industry! If light pads are great to check rapidly the overall color and clarity of a rough parcel, a good torch light (or fiber optics) are necessary to check for fractures and/or inclusions (particularly particles/silk in corundum). This is particularly true for very large stones like here with these huge emerald crystals from the Kagem mine in Zambia. . More than that… the quality of Zambian emeralds blew me away, the most incredible shade of green! As someone who was born and raised in Southern Africa, this trip filled me with immense pride, and hope. Many have questioned @gemfields , as they should question all mining operations.
