MIHow to measure strike & dip in the field ? 🪨🧭
Strike is the direction of the horizontal line on a rock surface, while dip is the angle at which the layer slopes downward from horizontal.
👉 Measuring strike:
Place your compass flat against the rock surface and rotate it until the bubble level is centered. The direction indicated by the needle gives you the strike.
👉 Measuring dip:
Turn the compass perpendicular to the strike, then use the clinometer to measure the steepest angle downward. That angle is your dip.
💡 Remember: dip is always perpendicular to strike, and together they define the orientation of any geological plane.

AMThis research, recently published in the journal Nature Geoscience, suggests that studying volcanic ash during eruptions could be used as a tool to forecast tremor intensity.
Continuing work by the research team, which now includes students from the Museum’s Master of Arts in Teaching Earth Science Residency Program, aims to better understand this mechanism at La Palma and worldwide.

VOAlways nice to be able to educate and inform about all things #volcano on TV! The current eruption has switched between effusive and minor explosive periods. The main hazard to folks on the island of Hawai'i is vog, which is volcanic smog. The gases blow around to the Kona side of the island and can cause respiratory irritation.

VAWhat’s that smell? Well it’s certainly not us! Pardon our stink, but our geothermal features are part of what makes Valles Caldera such a wonderful place, especially for Geoscience Education. We host several groups from universities across the United States, guiding them through our geologic history and assisting with field exercises like mapping, data collection, and scientific communication.
Here, Ranger Jordan, our resident rock nerd, and students from the College of Charleston are showing off one of our geothermal features, a bubbling mud pot! There are also features like fumaroles, warm springs, and vents… all which remind us of an explosive past, present, and future of Valles Caldera. The magma’s not done yet!

FI#PlanetPulse: Antarctic Glacier Shrinks 8 Kilometres in Two Months, Stuns Scientists
In a shocking climate development, Antarctica’s Hektoria Glacier—roughly the size of Philadelphia—has lost nearly half its mass in just two months, marking the fastest glacial retreat ever recorded. According to a Nature Geoscience study, Hektoria shrank by five miles between November and December 2022 after a protective sea-ice layer collapsed, exposing it to warmer waters and waves. Scientists say the glacier’s slippery seabed triggered a chain reaction of ice loss. Though relatively small, Hektoria’s sudden retreat raises urgent concerns—if larger Antarctic glaciers follow suit, global sea levels could rise dramatically, threatening coastal cities worldwide.
