1935 silent footage of the Buddha of the Piano, Mr. Leopold Godowsky, to which I added his 1930 recording of The Gardens of Buitenzorg from the Java Suite, composed in 1925 after visiting the island where he was enamored with the landscapes and gamelans: « I wanted to recreate my roaming experiences. This cycle of musical travelogues-tonal journeys – which I have named collectively « Phonoramas », begins with a series of twelve descriptive scenes in Java. » Happy birthday to Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) who grew up near Vilnius (Lithuania) and had little to no piano education… He started to play on the family piano at 3, ex nihilo: « I have not had 3 months of lessons in my life ». His prodigious talent led him to perform internationally as a child before becoming the protégé of Saint-Saëns as a teenager. He then moved to the U.S. in 1890 to become a professor. Later, he would teach Neuhaus, Abbey Simon, Jorge Bolet… I cannot resist sharing this 1917 eulogy by James Huneker: « I once called him the superman of piano-playing. Nothing like him, as far as I know, is to be found in the history of piano-playing since Chopin. He is an apparition. A Chopin doubled by a contrapuntalist. Bach and Chopin. The spirit of the German cantor and the Polish tone-poet in curious conjunction. His playing is transcendental; his piano compositions the transcendentalism of the future. Dramatic passion, flame, and fury are not present; they would be intruders on his map of music. The piano tone is always legitimate, never forced. But every other attribute he boasts. His ten digits are ten independent voices recreating the ancient polyphonic art of the Flemings. He is like a Brahma at the piano. Before his serene and all-embracing vision every school appears and disappears in the void. The beauty of his touch and tone are only matched by the delicate adjustment of his phrasing to the larger curve of the composition. Nothing musical is foreign to him. He is a pianist for pianists, and I am glad to say that the majority of them gladly recognise this fact. » #godowsky #piano #pianist #music #classical

Did you know that there is a surprising amount of video and audio footage of legendary composers and performers from the past? Many fans have absolutely no idea that these amazing historical documents exist -- so we'll be featuring some of them periodically on this IG page in order to spread awareness. Today: An important but frustrating historical document, early real color film footage of legendary super-virtuoso pianist Leopold Godowsky, Sr. (1870 - 1938) playing his own Steinway grand piano at home in Rochester, New York in 1935... albeit, recorded without any sound! Although we can’t hear what Godowsky is playing, it is still remarkable to be able to watch genuine color film footage of this great keyboard titan at work. A YouTube link to this footage, as well as nearly 15 minutes of additional (similarly silent) home videos, can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HsuGiVWJsI These films were all shot by Leopold Godowsky, Jr. (1900 - 1983), a gifted concert violinist in his own right as well as a brilliant inventor who actually co-created "Kodachrome," the first practical color transparency film. He shot these videos using an early prototype of that technology. Godowsky Jr went on to marry Frances Gershwin (1906 - 1999), the younger sister of Ira (1896 - 1983) and George (1898 - 1937) Gershwin. Francesco Libetta, age 32, performing Godowsky’s impossibly difficult arrangement of Chopin’s “Chromatique” Étude (Op. 10, No. 2) in 2002. • The ‘Studies on Chopin’s Études’ are a set of 53 arrangements by Leopold Godowsky, composed between 1894 and 1914. They are renowned for their technical difficulty: critic Harold C. Schonberg called them “the most impossibly difficult things ever written for the piano.” Godowsky was one of the most highly regarded pianists of his time and was heralded among musical giants as the “Buddha of the Piano”, with Arthur Rubinstein remarking that it would take him “five hundred years to get a technique like [Godowsky’s]” and Claudio Arrau declaring Godowsky “one of the greatest technicians”, even though he considered his playing “boring” and complained that Godowsky “never played above mezzo-forte.” The pianist in this video, Francesco Libetta, is the only pianist to have ever performed the entire set of Godowsky’s Studies on the Chopin Etudes in concert, from memory. Libetta was born in Galatone, Southern Italy in 1968 and his repertoire encompasses an enormously wide range, including all of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas (performed first in Italy, 1993/94), several Mozart and Beethoven concertos, the complete Handel and Chopin works, as well as major works by Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, and Ravel. He is active as a conductor (in symphonic repertoire, as well as collaborating with the Balletto del Sud in major Tchaikovsky ballets) and composer, his works including three piano concertos, symphonic pieces, electronic music, and ballet and movie scores. A.
